Applied AI Engineer, JavaScript – Intermediate to Senior

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Design and develop an AI and automation pipeline for the migration of content on municipal websites.

• Analyze, interpret, categorize, and extract metadata from various websites, documents, and images.

• Convert unstructured and semi-structured content into organized records and machine-readable JSON format.

• Create reusable migration frameworks for tracking, inventorying content, and scraping sites across municipalities.

• Generate standardized records for news, events, meetings, facilities, bylaws, and contacts.

• Develop scalable tools to assess the quality of AI outputs.

• Construct an MCP server that provides pipeline functionalities to AI assistants, the platform, and downstream systems.

• Create an internal application that empowers SimpliCity staff to independently migrate content.

• Collaborate directly with the CTO, full-stack engineer, and QA/content specialist.

• Provide technical recommendations and work alongside team members during actual municipal migration projects.

• Deliver a replicable pipeline that team members can execute under real project timelines.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 3 years of experience in software engineering.

• Proven experience in developing real software with LLMs beyond chat applications, including pipelines, agents, extraction or classification systems, or evaluation harnesses.

• Proficient in JavaScript and Node.js.

• Experience in creating repeatable tools that teammates can utilize independently.

• Ability to assess AI output quality and make informed choices between prompting, fine-tuning, and deterministic coding.

• Comfort level with messy HTML, scanned PDFs, and unstructured data sources.

• Experience or a willingness to gain proficiency in LLM APIs, coding agents, prompt and context engineering, model selection and fine-tuning, structured JSON-schema output, and output quality evaluation.

• Familiarity with ReactJS, REST APIs, composable/headless CMS architecture, and Microsoft Azure.

• Knowledge of unstructured and semi-structured web content, HTML and document parsing, content classification, and metadata extraction.

• Proficiency with Git, Bitbucket, GitHub, Jira, Slack, Notion, Microsoft 365, and OneDrive.

• A university degree or diploma in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

• Ability to work primarily during overlapping team hours of 8am–7pm PT when based outside British Columbia.

• Must reside in Canada; candidates outside Canada will not be considered.

• Availability to work 32–36 hours per week, mainly from Monday to Thursday, with occasional half-day Fridays or extra hours as needed.
