AI/ML Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Asia.

📋 Description

• Design, construct, assess, deploy, and enhance AI/ML systems for Agency Fund platforms and partner applications.

• Contribute to Calibrate, an open-source AI evaluation framework tailored for nonprofits.

• Collaborate with behavioral scientists and researchers to pinpoint challenges and convert solutions into reusable tools, playbooks, frameworks, and publications.

• Release substantive innovations derived from in-kind contributions as open-source.

• Execute rapid development and deployment cycles.

• Document technical choices and uphold engineering standards across AI components.

• Monitor applied AI research and integrate pertinent advancements into the team.

• Provide guidance and support to NGOs developing generative AI products.

• Mentor NGO personnel on industry best practices, culture, and tools.

• Assist in organizing workshops and seminars to share insights, best practices, and tools.

• Conduct site visits to observe NGO operations and formulate technical recommendations.

• Collaborate with partner nonprofits across East Africa, South Asia, and beyond.

⛳️ Requirements

• Strong foundational knowledge in mathematics, deep learning, LLMs, and contemporary AI systems.

• Over 4 years of practical ML engineering experience in building, assessing, and systematically enhancing at least one end-user-facing deep-learning product beyond model API integration, internal dashboards, or ML infrastructure.

• 1–2 years of experience in developing LLM-powered applications.

• Experience with at least one production-grade agent that goes beyond proof-of-concept demonstrations.

• Practical experience in evaluating AI systems, including dataset and evaluation design.

• Proficiency in prompting and context engineering for agentic systems.

• Highly skilled in programming with Python.

• Comfortable utilizing coding agents and accountable for completed work.

• Capable of reading research papers and testing relevant concepts.

• An experimental mindset with the ability to analyze data, models, and evaluations concurrently.

• Ability to think from first principles and devise practical, scalable solutions.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Skillful in conveying technical concepts clearly to non-engineering audiences.

• Commitment to developing AI responsibly and for direct social benefit.

• Candidates must be located in or willing to relocate to Sub-Saharan Africa or South Asia.

• Bonus: experience with multilingual NLP or low-resource languages; background in global health, international development, or social impact technology; expertise in behavioral science or behavior-change AI; knowledge of LLM data annotation and evaluation methodologies; familiarity with AI safety, alignment, or responsible AI; experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure; production model deployment; significant publications at top AI conferences or substantial technical writing.
