AI/ML Data Scientist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Assist in the design, development, testing, and evaluation of AI/ML solutions tailored for Coast Guard mission and business operations.

• Contribute to analytical solutions including predictive modeling, classification, anomaly detection, natural language processing (NLP), generative AI, and more.

• Aid in the training, tuning, validation, and documentation of machine learning models under the guidance of senior technical experts.

• Support the creation of AI-driven MVPs, technical demonstrations, automation pilots, and rapid experimentation initiatives.

• Investigate and assess commercial, government, and open-source AI/ML models and tools.

• Perform exploratory data analysis utilizing both structured and unstructured datasets.

• Identify trends, patterns, anomalies, and insights to enhance decision-making processes.

• Develop model baselines, performance metrics, acceptance criteria, testing methods, dashboards, visualizations, and analytical summaries.

• Assist in data readiness assessments, including data cleaning, normalization, transformation, ETL processes, reusable analytical datasets, and integration with systems.

• Support automation evaluations and the integration of AI/ML with enterprise platforms such as ServiceNow, Power Platform, Appian, and Salesforce.

• Engage in business process analysis, intelligent document processing, classification, entity extraction, summarization, forms digitization, and improvements in AI-assisted workflows.

• Contribute to mission modeling, simulation, scenario planning, forecasting, operational experimentation, and trade-space analysis.

• Translate analytical outputs into actionable findings and recommendations for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Assist with data sensitivity, privacy, access control, security, responsible AI practices, human-in-the-loop reviews, explainability, model monitoring, and ATO/cATO documentation.

• Participate in Agile planning, backlog refinement, sprint reviews, demonstrations, release activities, and sessions for gathering user feedback.

• Collaborate with product owners, developers, analysts, architects, engineers, cybersecurity professionals, and mission stakeholders.

• Prepare technical documentation, materials for demonstrations, input for stakeholder briefings, and measures of adoption and operational impact.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Artificial Intelligence, Engineering, Information Systems, Operations Research, or a related technical field.

• 0–2 years of experience in data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, or a related area.

• Basic experience in developing, evaluating, or supporting machine learning models.

• Proficiency in Python, SQL, Scikit-Learn, TensorFlow and/or PyTorch, and Hugging Face or similar AI/ML frameworks.

• Fundamental experience in predictive analytics, statistical analysis, data mining, and model evaluation.

• Experience with structured and/or unstructured datasets.

• Exposure to Generative AI, Large Language Models, or concepts in prompt engineering.

• Familiarity with Retrieval Augmented Generation concepts or architectures.

• Knowledge of cloud and data platforms such as AWS, Azure, GovCloud, Databricks, Apache Spark, Hadoop, Kafka, Airflow, or AWS Glue.

• Capability to assist in the integration of AI/ML functions with APIs, workflow tools, enterprise applications, or data services.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• U.S. Citizenship is required.

• Ability to obtain and maintain a DHS Public Trust.

• Preferred: internship, academic, or early career experience in support of DHS, USCG, DoD, or other Federal agencies.

• Preferred: familiarity with agentic AI, embeddings, vector databases, or AI orchestration frameworks.

• Preferred: knowledge of ServiceNow, Power Platform, Appian, Salesforce, or similar enterprise workflow environments.

• Preferred: experience in Agile methodologies, rapid prototyping, hackathons, academic projects, or MVP-style delivery environments.
