AI Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Develop the long-term AI technology strategy for Rapid7’s security platform.

• Establish the AI technology vision, architectural strategy, and multi-year roadmap across Detection and Response, Exposure and Remediation, and the broader platform.

• Influence company-wide investment and model strategy, determining whether to build, buy, or partner.

• Determine which frontier, open-source, and in-house model capabilities warrant investment.

• Champion and oversee the most critical AI initiatives with significant risk and impact across various organizations.

• Tackle complex technical challenges and facilitate progress on initiatives.

• Set standards for engineering, evaluation, and responsible AI for AI systems.

• Collaborate with executive leadership to ensure alignment between AI strategy and business strategy, product direction, and customer requirements.

• Predict changes in AI and the threat landscape and lead necessary organizational adaptations.

• Mentor and nurture Senior Principal, Principal, and Staff engineers.

• Cultivate a strong leadership presence in AI engineering.

• Represent Rapid7 as a prominent authority in AI and security among customers, partners, researchers, and the industry.

• Enhance engineering excellence through thought leadership, mentorship, and influence.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 16 years of experience in software or machine learning engineering.

• At least 2 years of experience leading the design of production-level LLM or agentic AI systems.

• A PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, AI, or a related field is preferred, or equivalent expertise demonstrated through industry experience and technical contributions.

• Proven track record of defining technical strategies and platforms that have influenced products or businesses at scale.

• In-depth expertise in LLMs and AI systems, including transformer architecture, training, post-training, evaluation, and large-scale inference optimization.

• Comprehensive technical knowledge across predictive AI, classical ML, distributed systems, and data platforms.

• Experience in shaping evaluation strategies, safety, and responsible AI practices for LLM and agent systems.

• Familiarity with scaling AI workloads in production settings, preferably on AWS.

• Capability to make decisions informed by accuracy, latency, cost, and risk considerations.

• Proficient in articulating technical visions, influencing senior leadership, and shaping strategic decisions.

• Skillful in building consensus among senior technical and business stakeholders.

• Ability to excel in uncertain conditions and initiate change at the forefront of AI.

• Recognized as an industry expert in AI, as evidenced by publications, patents, leadership in open-source projects, or influence in industry and standards organizations.

• Capacity to develop and inspire senior technical talent.
