VP of Engineering, Trade

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois, +1 more state.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the technical vision, architecture, and roadmap for Zerohash's trading organization, ensuring alignment with company strategy and the roadmaps of the transact, tokenize, and core teams.

• Build, lead, and expand a multi-team organization by hiring, developing, and retaining engineering managers, principal/staff engineers, and individual contributors as the team evolves.

• Serve as the executive owner of the reliability, performance, and risk of trading systems, which include matching engines, order/execution infrastructure, market data, and FIX connectivity.

• Collaborate directly with the CTO, SVP of Engineering, product leadership, and Zerohash's other VPs of Engineering to establish organization-wide technical standards, priorities, and engineering culture.

• Represent engineering to company leadership and key partners/clients concerning trading technology matters.

• Recruit, mentor, and develop engineering managers and senior technical talent, creating sustainable career paths for the team.

• Work alongside Compliance, Risk, and Legal teams to ensure that trading systems comply with the regulatory requirements relevant to Zerohash's markets.

• Lead decisions on build-versus-buy, technical debt, and architecture trade-offs at an organizational level.

• Maintain technical credibility, engaging deeply in system design and code-level decisions to earn the trust of senior engineers while staying competent with the codebase and system architecture.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 15 years of experience in software design and development, with extensive hands-on expertise in backend and distributed systems.

• More than 8 years of experience in engineering leadership, including managing managers and senior/principal/staff engineers.

• A proven history of building and scaling engineering organizations (30+ engineers) in a high-growth fintech, trading firm, exchange, or crypto company.

• Experience in owning multi-team technical strategy and roadmap at the VP, Director, or Head of Engineering level.

• Prior involvement with fast-growth startups and comfort navigating ambiguity.

• Exceptional skills in executive communication.

• Strong ability to partner cross-functionally with Product, Compliance, Risk, and Legal teams.

• Experience in cloud computing, particularly with AWS being highly desirable.

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent experience.

• A strong inclination towards serving your team and stakeholders, complemented by a growth mindset.

• Solid understanding of market structure, order types (Limit, Market, Stop, IOC, FOK), trade lifecycle, and common risks associated with electronic trading.

• Familiarity with regulatory requirements pertinent to trading systems (e.g., MiFID II, Reg NMS).

• Over 10 years of direct experience in developing, deploying, and maintaining high-performance, low-latency trading systems (e.g., central limit order books (CLOBs), matching engines, market data feeds).

• Proven expertise with FIX Protocol (4.2 and higher) and implementing highly reliable FIX Gateway solutions.

• Proficiency in highly concurrent, multi-threaded, low-garbage/zero-garbage code in finance-related programming languages such as C++, Rust, or Go.

• Demonstrated experience in optimizing system performance to reach single-digit microsecond latency.

• Strong background in building and managing mission-critical backend systems, including trade booking systems, high-throughput accounting/ledger systems, and real-time credit/risk limit systems.

• Experience with distributed system design and messaging frameworks (e.g., Aeron, Kafka, ZeroMQ) for data distribution and persistence.
