VP of Engineering

Posted 2 days ago

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Oversee four key value streams — Banking Core Integration, Business Banking, Vendor Integration, and Account Acquisition — ensuring delivery, velocity, and technical excellence across each.

• Manage and cultivate engineering managers, tech leads, and a Principal Engineer, fostering a high-performing organization that integrates AI-assisted development as a fundamental practice.

• Provide hands-on technical guidance by collaborating with tech leads on solution design, architectural reviews, production incident management, and complex troubleshooting, while maintaining close engagement with the systems to inform critical engineering decisions.

• Collaborate closely with the VP of Platform Engineering on cross-functional initiatives such as AI coding adoption, release coordination, architectural standards, and DevOps.

• Drive quarterly engineering OKRs aimed at enhancing AI productivity, code quality, and delivery velocity.

• Engage in senior leadership discussions alongside the COO, VP of Platform Engineering, and product leadership.

• Design and implement Bankjoy's engineering quality framework across all eight value streams — establishing standards for unit testing, integration testing, automated regression, and release readiness.

• Own a contemporary multi-platform automation framework that supports Angular, Swift, and Kotlin.

• Define and enforce quality gates — explicit go/no-go release criteria that every value stream must satisfy, including automated coverage thresholds, defect standards, and QE sign-off.

• Lead and develop a QA organization consisting of eight manual QA engineers and two dedicated automation QA engineers, collaborating with the QA manager to enhance the team towards a quality engineering model.

• Establish a test data management layer, environment parity standards, and CI/CD quality integration across all value streams.

• Create a quality dashboard that is accessible to engineering and leadership, showcasing automation coverage, open defect counts, and regression completion rates to ensure transparent release readiness.

• Work in partnership with the Release Manager to implement a structured release gate process, including mid-cycle readiness reviews and formal go/no-go decisions with explicit approvals from engineering, QA, and product.

• Collaborate closely with Technical Support to ensure feedback loops are established between production issues and engineering prioritization — making sure that client-impacting defects drive process improvements rather than just fixes.

• Conduct post-release retrospectives for every release that impacts clients — extracting systemic insights and driving specific process improvements with designated owners and deadlines.

• Partner with product leadership to enforce discipline around scope freeze and ensure QEs are engaged in sprint planning and story grooming, not solely at the end of the sprint.

• Advocate for AI-assisted coding adoption across your four value streams — working alongside the VP of Platform Engineering who oversees the organization-wide AI initiative.

• Integrate AI productivity into engineering performance metrics — including adoption and fluency, output velocity, code quality with AI, and knowledge sharing.

• Ensure that AI tools are utilized in both QA and development — encompassing AI-assisted test generation, automated test maintenance, and prompt-driven regression coverage.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of engineering experience, with at least 4 years in an engineering leadership role, managing engineering managers and senior individual contributors.

• Extensive background in quality engineering — having personally built or revamped automation frameworks, rather than merely overseeing them.

• Proven track record of migrating automation frameworks in a multi-platform environment (web and native mobile — iOS and Android).

• Demonstrated success in driving a cultural transition from manual-heavy to automation-first QA in fintech, banking, or similarly regulated sectors.

• Experience in implementing release gate processes and upholding go/no-go decisions under time constraints — being able to call a no-go and maintain that stance.

• Practical experience with modern automation tools — such as Playwright, Cypress, Appium, Maestro, or their equivalents; familiarity with Angular, Swift, and Kotlin environments is a significant plus.

• Experience in promoting AI coding tool adoption across engineering teams — fostering cultural and productivity changes beyond personal usage.

• Strong technical acumen with the capability to engage directly in solution design, architecture discussions, production incident response, root-cause analysis, and complex debugging with engineering leads and senior engineers.

• Ability to balance strategic leadership with operational execution, staying sufficiently close to systems and engineering workflows to make informed technical and delivery decisions in high-pressure situations.

• Strong cross-functional credibility — having collaborated closely with technical support, release management, and product teams to address systemic quality issues, not just those internal to engineering.

• Exceptional communication and organizational influence skills — able to hold senior stakeholders accountable to quality standards without relying on hierarchical power.
