VP of Engineering Applications, Artificial Intelligence

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the application engineering strategy and its execution across backend, mobile, and desktop platforms.

• Lead and develop a small, senior team of application engineers, encompassing backend, mobile, and desktop specialists.

• Set the architectural vision for Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven product workflows, APIs, and client integrations.

• Ensure the integration of AI functionalities into the product with clear abstractions, predictable behavior, and effective failure handling.

• Collaborate closely with Machine Learning leadership to convert model capabilities into deployable product features.

• Make significant decisions impacting latency, cost, reliability, security, and user experience.

• Define clear ownership boundaries across backend, mobile, and desktop to avoid architectural inconsistencies.

• Ensure production readiness through observability, monitoring, retries, fallbacks, privacy, and cost management.

• Balance the need for speed and discipline, delivering quickly while maintaining long-term system quality.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience in leading application or product engineering for complex systems.

• Experience in Artificial Intelligence (AI) is essential.

• Strong practical background in building and deploying backend systems utilized in production.

• Proven experience in delivering AI-powered products with a comprehensive understanding of model integration challenges.

• Exceptional system design capabilities across services, APIs, clients, and data flows.

• Comfort in operating across various platforms (backend, mobile, desktop), even if your expertise lies primarily in one area.

• Demonstrated ability to make impactful technical decisions in uncertain situations.

• A strong inclination towards shipping, iterating, and learning from real-world usage.

• Low ego, sound judgment, and the capability to elevate the technical standards for the entire applications team.
