This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Direct the strategy, product management, engineering, governance, modernization, and reliable functioning of Humana’s enterprise API and integration ecosystem.
• Oversee the API product roadmap, lifecycle, investment priorities, adoption, reuse, health, and user experience.
• Define and develop consumer-focused Omnichannel APIs across member, provider, associate, and partner interactions.
• Manage modernization efforts by transitioning producers and consumers from legacy and point APIs to contemporary enterprise interfaces.
• Decommission redundant APIs, unsupported gateways, and outdated integration technologies.
• Take ownership of Humana’s external API strategy and ensure secure API exposure to partners and the wider ecosystem.
• Lead API-enabled partnership management, including partner certification, onboarding, developer experience, support, and continuity.
• Integrate AI into API design, delivery, governance, testing, and consumer migration.
• Ensure safe API exposure to AI agents through MCP and other emerging agent protocols.
• Establish standards for REST, GraphQL, asynchronous messaging, event-driven APIs, and emerging integration protocols.
• Govern API lifecycle controls, encompassing design, documentation, schema validation, contract testing, security testing, performance testing, deployment, monitoring, versioning, deprecation, and retirement.
• Enhance the Unified API Gateway and Unified API Catalog.
• Implement zero-trust API security and establish contract-first engineering and compatibility controls.
• Define Omnichannel API standards, reference patterns, reusable building blocks, schemas, metadata, documentation, and AI-agent readiness.
• Sequence modernization phases, manage dependencies, cutovers, rollback readiness, deprecation, exceptions, and executive-visible reporting.
• Manage external API partnerships, certification, conformance testing, sandbox access, credentials, certificates, SLAs, versioning, support, escalation, and deprecation communications.
• Oversee partner identity, authorization, data sharing, consent, privacy, PHI/PII protection, auditability, and CMS and HL7 FHIR obligations.
• Govern third-party API consumption, continuity planning, and exit or transition readiness.
• Manage production operations for shared API platforms, including SLOs, SLIs, error budgets, capacity, quotas, throttling, dependency mapping, monitoring, and operational readiness.
• Lead incident and problem management, continuity and disaster recovery, failover, recovery, release, and rollback readiness.
• Foster developer enablement, documentation, golden paths, communities of practice, and support models.
• Design and lead the API Technologies organization, focusing on workforce strategy, succession, leadership development, career paths, performance culture, and capability building.
• Oversee vendors, licensing, FinOps, enterprise-scale budgets, audit readiness, controls, and regulatory compliance.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.
• 15+ years of advancing technology experience.
• 8+ years of experience leading API, integration, platform engineering, or product teams.
• Extensive knowledge of enterprise API and integration strategy, product management, standards, governance, gateways, catalogs, event-driven architecture, messaging, streaming, and modern integration patterns.
• Experience in defining and governing external and partner APIs, focusing on secure exposure, partner onboarding, certification, developer experience, agreements, and regulatory compliance.
• Proven experience in managing APIs or platforms as products at an enterprise scale.
• Experience in leading large-scale modernization initiatives across producers and consumers.
• Familiarity with applying AI and automation in API design, delivery, testing, governance, and migration.
• Knowledge of agentic integration patterns, MCP, or similar emerging technologies.
• Strong understanding of API and integration security, including OAuth 2.x, approved token standards, workload identity, least privilege, zero-trust principles, secrets management, OWASP API risks, and external authorization.
• Production leadership experience in reliability engineering, SLOs, resilience, incident and problem management, operational readiness, and continuity planning.
• Leadership experience in organizational contexts, including leading leaders, workforce strategy, succession planning, capability building, and fostering high-performing product and engineering cultures.
• Financial management expertise, including multi-year investment planning, enterprise-scale budgets, vendor management, and accountability in regulated environments.
• Exceptional skills in managing executive stakeholders and influencing technology, business, risk, legal, and external partner leaders.
• Preferred: experience with API value-realization models, partner ecosystems, open or public API programs, and external developer platforms.
• Preferred: familiarity with API gateway and catalog platforms, event and streaming technologies, GraphQL, and MCP.
• Preferred: a proven track record of enterprise-wide modernization, technical-debt reduction, middleware rationalization, and platform consolidation.
• Preferred: experience in healthcare or another highly regulated industry, including CMS requirements and HL7 FHIR.
• Minimum home internet speed of 25 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload.
