Vice President, Legal Advocacy

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Participate in federal and state litigation to uphold the status of charter schools as public institutions.

• Locate and engage local legal counsel.

• Supervise counsel throughout the litigation process.

• Collaborate with local advocates on case theories and strategies, reviewing and refining briefs while offering insights based on other charter cases.

• Work with the communications team to formulate media strategies.

• Recruit potential litigants, including plaintiffs and defendant intervenors.

• Assess and evaluate high-risk/high-opportunity cases to sustain and enhance the state charter environment.

• Identify and evaluate cases related to charter school autonomy and funding accessibility policies.

• Foster the Alliance of Public Charter School Attorneys legal network and utilize its knowledge and expertise.

• Create both in-person and virtual training sessions for network education and attract attorneys in areas of high need.

• Network and speak on critical issues to promote the legal advocacy agenda.

• Monitor legal cases across the nation and pinpoint federal and multi-state legal policy matters impacting the charter sector.

• Report to the Chief Legal Officer and work closely with senior attorneys and cross-functional stakeholders.

⛳️ Requirements

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.

• At least 7 years of experience in federal district and/or appellate litigation or state constitutional litigation.

• Experience in a public interest law firm is an advantage.

• Familiarity with media and utilizing communications in a litigation advocacy campaign.

• Strong knowledge of education law and public policy.

• Capability to monitor emerging legal issues and convert them into strategic initiatives.

• Proven track record in identifying, analyzing, and weighing risks and opportunities.

• Demonstrated success in cross-functional collaboration with legal, communications, government affairs, and external stakeholders.

• Excellent research, writing, legal analysis, and presentation abilities.

• Aptitude for conveying complex legal concepts to non-legal audiences.

• Strong skills in partnership and relationship building.

• Preferred knowledge of charter school law and operations.

• Experience in convening stakeholders for strategic discussions and collective learning.
