Vice President, Finance

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Oregon.

📋 Description

• Oversee the entire spectrum of our financial operations, encompassing daily accounting and grants management through to long-term financial planning and reporting to the board.

• Lead a dedicated team that encompasses finance and grants & contracts, serving as the operational backbone of City Fund’s financial activities.

• Propel the ongoing enhancement of our financial systems and infrastructure as the organization expands in scope, size, and complexity.

• Guarantee accuracy and compliance in the financial handling of our 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 527 entities.

• Take ownership of the monthly closing process, ensuring precision and promptness.

• Direct the annual budgeting process, ensuring that departmental leaders and partners have the necessary models, templates, and guidance to effectively manage their budget choices.

• Ensure the timely receipt and tracking of contributions and the payment of liabilities.

• Offer strategic leadership and oversight for the Grants & Contracts function.

⛳️ Requirements

• Demonstrated ability to provide sound and ethical financial advice to executive leadership, with a proven history of managing financial operations in a nonprofit or mission-driven environment.

• Comprehensive understanding of nonprofit finance and accounting best practices, including multi-entity (c3/c4/527) structures, GAAP, and compliance frameworks.

• Familiarity and experience with working in a 527 organization.

• Proven experience in leading and developing teams, employing a management style that establishes clear expectations, offers constructive feedback, and promotes a culture of accountability and ongoing learning.

• Readiness and capability to think broadly while engaging in the details across the finance and grants and contracts sectors.

• Knowledge of (or the ability to quickly gain expertise in) grants management operations, including grantmaking compliance, grants management systems, and the intersection of grants and finance workflows.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to communicate complex financial information to diverse audiences, including the Board, partners, and senior leaders.

• Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail, combined with the ability to manage competing priorities and advance work in a lean, high-performing team.

• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting to Board members, funders, and executive leadership.

• Proficient with modern financial systems (Sage Intacct is highly preferred) and comfortable adopting new technologies to enhance organizational effectiveness.

• A service-oriented mindset in finance leadership, constructing the infrastructure, reporting, and tools that empower senior leaders and partners to make informed strategic decisions rather than positioning oneself as the primary strategic decision-maker.
