This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +1 more state.
• Lead the accounting organization and act as the senior owner of the controllership function, which includes financial reporting, accounting operations, closing processes, technical accounting, controls, tax, and treasury.
• Ensure the preparation of accurate, timely, and GAAP-compliant financial statements, management reporting, board/investor reporting support, and adherence to regulatory compliance.
• Manage the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes, focusing on enhancing close speed, maintaining balance sheet discipline, performing account reconciliations, preparing supporting schedules, and ensuring reporting reliability.
• Supervise essential accounting functions such as general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, revenue recognition, fixed assets, consolidations, and intercompany activities.
• Develop and continuously refine accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, and documentation to facilitate audit readiness and support scalable growth.
• Direct tax compliance and planning across federal, state, local, and indirect taxes, including sales and use tax, nexus considerations, and coordination with external advisors.
• Oversee treasury and cash management operations, which include cash forecasting, liquidity planning, banking relationships, and working capital processes in collaboration with FP&A and the CFO.
• Foster efficient and effective order-to-cash processes, encompassing customer onboarding, billing, collections, revenue recognition, data integrity, and cash application.
• Manage and enhance accounting systems and process architecture, including NetSuite, integrations with Salesforce and HRIS/payroll systems, automated data flows, and accounting data governance.
• Identify, assess, and implement AI-enabled tools and automation opportunities throughout the accounting close, account reconciliations, variance analysis, financial reporting, and internal control processes.
• Collaborate with Finance, FP&A, IT, Legal, and Security teams to ensure the responsible implementation of AI tools, maintaining appropriate data governance, review controls, auditability, and safeguarding confidential financial information.
• Promote continuous improvement within the accounting function by leveraging automation, AI, and process redesign to minimize manual work, enhance accuracy, shorten closing timelines, and scale the finance organization.
• Assist with M&A integration and acquisition accounting, including purchase accounting, integration of acquired entities, policy harmonization, and consolidation of finance processes post-acquisitions.
• Work cross-functionally with FP&A, Revenue Operations, Legal, HR, Sales, Operations, and Technology to enhance business processes, financial visibility, and accountability.
• Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing accounting team and network of external advisors, fostering a culture of ownership, urgency, continuous improvement, and exceptional internal customer service.
• 15+ years of progressive accounting leadership experience, encompassing controllership and corporate accounting in a growth-stage, multi-entity, or global organization.
• Previous experience as a VP of Accounting, Corporate Controller, Assistant Controller, or similar senior accounting leader responsible for close, reporting, controls, and accounting operations.
• CPA is strongly preferred; experience in public accounting, particularly with Big 4 or national firms, or audit-readiness experience is a significant advantage.
• In-depth knowledge of U.S. GAAP, revenue recognition, technical accounting, tax compliance, financial reporting, internal controls, and audit processes.
• Proficient in NetSuite and a demonstrated history of enhancing accounting systems, integrations, data quality, and scalable finance processes.
• Familiarity with artificial intelligence, automation, and emerging finance technologies, with the capability to thoughtfully integrate these tools into accounting operations, financial reporting, close management, and internal controls.
• Experience assisting with capital raises, lender/investor reporting, board reporting, financial diligence, or transaction readiness is preferred.
• Knowledge of M&A integration, purchase accounting, multi-entity consolidation, and process harmonization following acquisitions is preferred.
• Strong executive presence and communication skills, with the capability to influence cross-functional stakeholders and articulate complex accounting issues clearly.
• Proven ability to lead through uncertainty, enhance underdeveloped processes, and instill operational discipline in a fast-paced environment.
• Capable of working remotely and coordinating effectively with a fully remote and globally distributed workforce.
• Excellent English written and verbal communication skills.
• Interest in technology, renewable energy, infrastructure, and the drone/UAV industry.
• Experience or knowledge in drone operations and regulations is a plus.
