Underwriting Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Colorado.

📋 Description

• Take responsibility for the assigned territory by ensuring profitable growth and the accomplishment of profit and premium objectives aligned with business unit strategies.

• Lead a team of underwriters in profitably assessing complex new and renewal business through risk evaluation, pricing, contractual integrity, and account oversight, adhering to delegated authority while ensuring compliance with regulations.

• Effectively mentor and develop the team to implement underwriting technical discipline and uphold established quality standards to: Showcase critical thinking in evaluating risk and recognizing exposures and controls.

• Price risks appropriately based on exposures and controls.

• Establish suitable terms and conditions to maintain a profitable portfolio.

• Document assigned files with the underwriting rationale.

• Act as a subject matter expert to support team members with complex risks.

• Utilize strong portfolio management skills to meet profit and premium goals for designated business unit strategies.

• Execute business plans to achieve set operational targets for written premium, loss ratio, renewal retention, pricing, and expense management.

• Meet production targets within the designated territory, guiding the team to: Effectively conduct both in-person and virtual sales meetings with agencies and clients.

• Identify and cultivate a robust pipeline of new business opportunities.

• Build and sustain successful relationships with producers and agencies.

• Collaborate with Business Unit and Line of Business underwriting, Sales and Distribution, Underwriting Center, Underwriting Support, Risk Control, Legal, Claims, and other internal partners to ensure optimal stakeholder management.

• Demonstrate and coach market-facing sales skills such as prospecting, marketing, pipelining, production meetings, and fostering strong relationships with producers and agencies, enhancing UFG’s market presence.

• Represent UFG in the marketplace, effectively communicating the company’s capabilities in underwriting, risk control, and claims across all business units at UFG.

⛳️ Requirements

• A four-year college degree is preferred.

• Completion of AU Designation, CIC, and/or CPCU designations is preferred.

• Leadership or management certification or educational experience is preferred.

• A minimum of 7 years of commercial lines underwriting experience is preferred.

• Advanced knowledge in risk evaluation and insurance contracts.

• Ability to implement the current underwriting strategy for the assigned territory to make effective underwriting decisions.

• Skill in leading a team by employing collaboration, persuasion, vision, emotional intelligence, and talent development.

• Proven success in cultivating and maintaining business relationships with key clients to support departmental objectives.

• Strong leadership capabilities, including the ability to mentor, coach, and train.
