Thermal Systems Lead Engineer – Sustainable Design

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in North Carolina.

📋 Description

• Collaborate with engineering leads from the technical loop, mechanical loop, and electrical/power sectors to ensure that multi-generational system roadmaps reflect and produce sustainable data center designs.

• Act as an internal authority on sustainable data center designs, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of current and emerging technologies to promote sustainability.

• Establish sustainability standards for all system reference designs, incorporating metrics for Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE), carbon footprint, and sound levels (dB).

• Spearhead initiatives to quantify the benefits of sustainable data centers and Trane Technologies’ system architecture reference designs.

• Create and oversee system-level Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) in close collaboration with our enterprise sustainability team.

• Work alongside product and engineering teams to develop a roadmap aimed at enhancing the sustainability performance of our solutions.

• Offer coaching, mentoring, and technical advice to junior engineers and cross-functional team members, promoting a culture of knowledge sharing.

• Interact with regulatory agencies and industry forums to advocate for Trane Technologies’ position on data center sustainability.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.

• At least 7-10 years of engineering experience, with a strong emphasis on sustainable designs in mission-critical facilities and data centers.

• Proven experience in sustainable building design, energy modeling, or life cycle assessment.

• Extensive knowledge of data center sustainability metrics (PUE, WUE, CUE).

• Understanding of environmental regulations and green building certifications.

• A strong passion for advancing sustainability and a demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional teams.

• Excellent collaboration skills with both cross-functional teams and external partners.

• Ability to excel in a fast-paced, dynamic environment serving mission-critical customers.
