• Oversee state-level media relations to bolster legislative and grassroots initiatives.
• Collaborate with state leaders and government affairs firms to pitch and secure impactful stories in local and regional media; cultivate and sustain strong connections with reporters, editors, and producers.
• Compose and disseminate press releases, op-eds, talking points, advisories, and statements tailored for state and regional audiences.
• Develop state-level messaging that aligns with the national narrative and resonates with diverse partisan and ideological perspectives.
• Achieve press coverage for organizational milestones, legislative achievements, and events.
• Monitor state media coverage in targeted states and provide timely response guidance as required.
• Assist in coordinated communications efforts across digital, social, and earned media channels.
• Support spokespersons with talking points, Q&A, and message refinement.
• Ensure consistent alignment with organizational values and national communication strategies while customizing content for state-specific contexts.
• Review and maintain up-to-date communications materials across the organization to ensure clarity, consistency, and alignment with American Promise messaging.
• Assist the Chief Communications Officer in advancing communication priorities on schedule across the team.
• Act as the CCO’s continuity point for communications in their absence, ensuring all communication outputs remain aligned, timely, and on-message.
• 5–8 years of experience in communications, public relations, political campaigns, journalism, or related fields.
• Proven media relations experience, including the ability to pitch and secure stories in state or regional media outlets.
• Outstanding writing and editing abilities across various formats (press releases, op-eds, talking points, media Q&A, and other collateral).
• Strong editorial and political instincts, capable of assessing risk, timing, and tone in fast-paced media environments.
• Demonstrated success in shaping and targeting messages for a diverse, cross-partisan audience.
• Experience managing media relations within a political, advocacy, or legislative context.
• Strong dedication to cross-partisan engagement and an appreciation for differing viewpoints.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
• Collaborative, team-oriented mindset with enthusiasm for contributing to a small but expanding team.
• Experience working effectively with remote teams.
• Strongly preferred: Experience working with or within state legislatures and a solid understanding of the legislative process.
• Established relationships with state-level political or policy reporters.
