Storage Backup Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in District of Columbia, +1 more state.

📋 Description

• Manage enterprise SAN and NAS storage infrastructures, which includes provisioning, capacity planning, performance optimization, and lifecycle management.

• Design and uphold enterprise backup frameworks utilizing Veeam, Commvault, or NetBackup for both on-premises and AWS cloud environments.

• Assist in the execution of the customer’s business disaster continuity and recovery (BDCR) strategy, encompassing replication, failover, and recovery testing for essential financial systems.

• Oversee backup job success rates, resolve failures, and ensure recovery time and recovery point objectives (RTO/RPO) are documented in the customer's continuity of operations (COOP) plan.

• Facilitate the data migration process from legacy on-premises storage to cloud-based solutions such as Amazon S3, EBS, and FSx.

• Establish and maintain storage security measures, including encryption at rest, access controls, and audit logging in compliance with NIST SP 800-53.

• Collaborate with database and server engineering teams to synchronize storage and backup designs with application recovery needs.

• Keep precise documentation of storage architecture, backup schedules, and disaster recovery runbooks.

• Engage in scheduled DR/failover drills and prepare after-action reports.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

• At least 5 years of experience in managing enterprise storage (SAN/NAS) and backup systems.

• Practical experience with enterprise backup solutions (Veeam, Commvault, NetBackup, or similar).

• Familiarity with cloud storage and backup solutions (AWS S3/EBS/FSx or similar).

• Solid understanding of data protection principles, including RTO/RPO, replication, and disaster recovery testing.

• Knowledge of storage security best practices, including encryption and access controls.

• Awareness of immutable/air-gapped backups and standards for resilience.

• Strong troubleshooting abilities and documentation skills.

• Capability to obtain Public Trust clearance.

• Experience in a federal government IT setting.

• Understanding of compliance frameworks such as FedRAMP, FISMA, or NIST.

• Vendor certification in a major storage or backup technology.

• Background in supporting a formal BDCR or COOP program for a federal financial or mission-critical system.

• Involvement in storage migration during a data center consolidation initiative.

• AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate or specialized knowledge in AWS storage.
