
State and Local Tax Director – HNW/Private Wealth

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.
• Act as a senior strategic consultant to high net worth individuals, families, business owners, executives, and family offices regarding important state income tax issues.
• Lead intricate residency, domicile, and multistate individual income tax planning, as well as audits, appeals, and disputes.
• Provide oversight of quality and risk at the executive level for significant assignments.
• Collaborate with Private Wealth leaders to develop and implement a nationwide service strategy.
• Cultivate relationships with clients, referral sources, and internal partners.
• Drive business development, revenue enhancement, proposals, pricing strategies, and opportunity conversion.
• Establish external referral networks among attorneys, wealth advisors, family offices, investment professionals, bankers, and other trusted advisors.
• Build market visibility through thought leadership, speaking engagements, webinars, conferences, and technical publications.
• Keep track of legislative, regulatory, administrative, and judicial changes.
• Enhance practice methodologies, technical resources, documentation standards, and quality control processes.
• Manage significant client relationships and engagements.
• Provide strategic guidance to Senior Managers and Managers.
• Foster the development of emerging leaders through mentoring and delegation.
• Engage in recruiting, retention, performance management, promotions, and succession planning.
• Collaborate with SALT and Private Wealth leadership on strategic planning, resources, investments, market opportunities, and revenue objectives.
• Represent Baker Tilly in the marketplace.
• Bachelor's degree.
• 12 years of professional experience.
• A degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
• Certification as CPA, CMI, or JD/LLM is required.
• In-depth state and local tax experience, including strong technical knowledge in individual income taxation, residency and domicile issues, statutory residency, income sourcing, and major state tax audits and disputes.
• Proven track record in generating new business, enhancing client relationships, developing referral sources, and establishing a robust market presence with a sustainable pipeline.
• Demonstrated capacity to lead through others, including developing senior professionals, effective delegation, building accountability, and attracting and retaining top talent.
• Exceptional executive-level communication, presentation, negotiation, and relationship management skills.
• Proven thought leadership through writing, speaking, training, or other market-facing initiatives.
• Ability to balance growth, client service, technical quality, talent development, engagement economics, and risk management across a substantial portfolio of relationships and engagements.
• Strong entrepreneurial spirit and demonstrated interest in building and expanding a specialized professional services practice.
• Must be eligible to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
