This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Establish and nurture relationships while developing technical advocates within government and partner organizations.

• Support project planning efforts and assist in drafting statements of work and technical specifications.

• Collaborate closely with cross-functional government partners to identify issues, understand system limitations, and propose viable and high-impact technical solutions that address the needs of all stakeholders.

• Aid in documenting and conveying technical best practices, as well as framing government RFPs.

• Work with government partners to create written materials that explain complex technical concepts.

• Offer technical insights and expertise aimed at enhancing government services for agencies, organizational stakeholders, and other essential audiences.

• Assess project scope and create preliminary project plans for government initiatives.

• Contribute technical analysis to evaluations of potential new state engagements, including landscape research and partner capacity assessments, to support team and leadership decision-making.

• Execute proof-of-concept applications, software installations, and custom development projects.

• Lead light technical implementations and low/no-code software solutions.

• Design and implement training plans and documentation to empower government agencies in improving and modernizing service delivery.

• Perform other duties as assigned.


⛳️ Requirements

• Over 7 years of experience as a Software Engineer, Solutions Engineer, or Solutions Architect, with a history of leading projects and engaging with customers.

• Recent experience in back-end development, database management, data science, and/or DevOps.

• More than 4 years of experience coding backend systems and data infrastructure using an industry-standard programming language (such as Python, Java, C#, Ruby, etc.).

• Recent hands-on experience integrating emerging technologies (e.g., generative AI models) into existing workflows or new solutions.

• Strong self-management abilities and a proven track record of handling multiple engagements simultaneously.

• Inherently curious and empathetic; capable of thoughtfully balancing the needs of partners, users, and teams to identify solutions that advance work towards greater impact.

• Resilience and adaptability; able to navigate relationships, uncertainty, and technical challenges, effectively unblocking yourself and your team.

• Ability to conduct research to understand current systems and architectures, and leverage this knowledge to design new solutions and architectures.

• An interest in emerging AI tools coupled with a commitment to their responsible and effective use.

• A strong dedication to Code for America's mission of enhancing government services for those who need them the most.


🏝️ Benefits

• Laptop provided.

• A one-time $700 payment for remote environment setup; $200 stipend (included in the first paycheck) and up to $500 reimbursement, following our equipment policy.

• Monthly reimbursement of $50 for cell phone and/or internet expenses.

• An annual stipend of $500 (per calendar year) for professional development, prorated at the time of hire.

• Up to $500 of professional development funds can be carried over each year, up to a maximum of $1000.

• Training and guidance for staff required to utilize AI as part of their role, along with opportunities for employees to acquire AI-related skills to support professional and career advancement.

• Employees receive a 100% employer match on the first 3% of their contributions.

• Employees with over 3 years of service receive an additional 50% match on contributions between 3% and 5%, for a maximum employer contribution of 5%.

• At least one no-cost health insurance option available for full-time employees covering employee-only coverage.

• A minimum of 80% coverage of the cost for dependent health insurance.

• Code for America employees have the flexibility to work remotely from anywhere in the US.

• Collaborative working hours: we aim to schedule all internal meetings between 10 AM - 3 PM PT. All Code for America staff are expected to be available during these designated hours.

• Open personal time off (subject to manager approval), a minimum of 14 paid holidays, and an organization-wide closure from Christmas Day through New Year's Day.

• Paid sick leave; up to 96 hours annually.

• 17 weeks of paid parental and family leave.

• 3 weeks of paid sabbatical after 5 years of service.
