
Staff Software Engineer β Repositories

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
β’ Take charge of the technical direction for crucial components of the Chainguard Repository, which includes customer-facing registries, APIs, and systems that ensure Chainguard artifacts are accessible in a secure and dependable manner.
β’ Design, develop, and manage high-availability backend services in Go that currently serve libraries and help establish a foundation for containers, images, and APK repositories in the future.
β’ Spearhead efforts related to scalability, reliability, observability, and load testing for production systems that customers utilize directly.
β’ Influence technical decisions regarding repository architecture, service boundaries, and the operational patterns required to maintain artifact-serving infrastructure at scale.
β’ Collaborate closely with engineers from Libraries, Build Platform, Delivery, Product, and Security to create a unified repository experience and gradually expand support for additional artifact types.
β’ Guide other engineers, elevate the standards for design and code reviews, and act as a catalyst in a dynamic team where staff engineers are expected to take ownership of significant deliverables and shape team operations.
β’ Over 8 years of experience in building and managing production backend or infrastructure systems, demonstrating clear staff-level ownership and technical leadership.
β’ Proficient in Go, or possess extensive backend systems expertise with the ability to quickly learn Go.
β’ Experience in constructing or managing customer-facing infrastructure such as package registries, artifact repositories, APIs, developer platforms, or other high-scale serving systems.
β’ Proven track record in deploying and overseeing services in production, exhibiting strong judgment regarding reliability, observability, performance, and operational trade-offs.
β’ Comfortable navigating both application and infrastructure layers, including service development, cloud infrastructure, and infrastructure as code tools like Terraform.
β’ Possess strong systems instincts and curiosity: actively identify issues, pursue solutions, and enhance the platform before problems arise that could hinder customers or internal teams.
β’ Exceptional communication and collaboration abilities, particularly in a remote setting where staff engineers are expected to foster alignment across teams and transform ambiguity into progress.
