Staff Software Engineer, Passport & Commerce – Backend

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Create and enhance core services and data models to track account status, eligibility, and entitlements for millions of accounts.

• Collaborate with product and design teams to convert product ideas into scalable and adaptable technical designs.

• Work together with Payments and Wallet engineering to ensure that credits, discounts, and host-funded programs are accurately processed from start to finish.

• Establish technical direction and lead design reviews within an expanding team.

• Provide mentorship to engineers and elevate the standards for system design.

• Guide cross-team architectural decisions alongside the Identity & Privacy and Profile & Community teams.

• Spot and mitigate risks related to reliability, scalability, and data integrity before they impact guests or hosts.

• Outline the team's scope, roadmap, and technical foundations for a newly established organization.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 9 years of experience in designing and scaling complex, distributed backend systems.

• Demonstrated technical leadership in fast-paced growth environments.

• Proven history of directing architectural strategies for a team or domain.

• In-depth knowledge of distributed systems fundamentals, such as data consistency, caching, service decomposition, and API design at scale.

• Preferred experience in building or operating systems related to financial transactions, entitlements, or stateful account data.

• Background in mentoring senior engineers and influencing technical decisions across various teams.

• Comfortable navigating ambiguity within a newly formed team.

• Experience in defining team scope, roadmap, and technical foundations.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Proven ability to drive alignment among engineering, product, and design partners.

• Must reside in a state where Airbnb, Inc. is registered.
