Staff Software Engineer – Distributed Systems

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Malaysia, +2 more states.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and enhance robust backend services and APIs that drive Toku's cloud communications platform.

• Architect and create scalable distributed systems and microservices, making informed architectural choices regarding service boundaries, scalability, reliability, latency, fault tolerance, and operational simplicity.

• Construct and advance event-driven systems utilizing technologies such as Kafka, AWS SQS, RabbitMQ, and similar messaging platforms to facilitate high-volume asynchronous communication workflows.

• Develop backend integrations that connect Toku's platform with external communication providers, internal platform services, and asynchronous workflows.

• Create and manage backend services on AWS while applying modern cloud-native engineering principles.

• Contribute to the technical direction, challenge existing designs, enhance architecture, and assist in evolving backend systems towards simpler, more scalable, and maintainable solutions.

• Take ownership of backend systems in production, including monitoring, troubleshooting, performance optimization, reliability enhancements, incident investigation, and ongoing operational improvements.

• Participate in the continuous modernization of backend services, promoting the increased adoption of Go, event-driven architecture, and scalable distributed systems.

• Design and optimize SQL-based data models, ensuring performance, accuracy, and scalability.

• Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code while actively engaging in design discussions, code reviews, and technical decision-making.

• Proactively identify technical debt, recurring engineering challenges, and improvement opportunities, driving solutions to completion while collaborating across multiple engineering teams.

⛳️ Requirements

• Strong hands-on experience in designing, building, and operating production backend systems.

• Robust practical experience in developing production backend services using Go.

• Familiarity with designing or managing distributed systems, microservices, and backend architectures, with an understanding of scalability, latency, resilience, fault tolerance, and system trade-offs.

• Practical experience with technologies such as Kafka, AWS SQS, RabbitMQ, or similar messaging and event-streaming platforms.

• Experience in designing, building, and integrating production APIs and backend services.

• Solid cloud engineering fundamentals with a preference for AWS experience, although candidates with strong Azure or GCP experience are also welcome to apply.

• Strong SQL expertise, encompassing schema design, query optimization, and production data management.

• Familiarity with NoSQL technologies like DynamoDB, Cassandra, or Redis is advantageous.

• Experience in operating production systems, including monitoring, troubleshooting, incident response, performance optimization, and continuous reliability enhancements.

• Proven ability to enhance existing systems, influence technical direction, and proactively resolve engineering challenges rather than merely completing assigned tasks.

• Experience with observability and monitoring tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Datadog, or similar technologies.
