Staff Software Engineer – Backend

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Define the technical vision for the Everand backend by creating and sharing design documents, facilitating architecture reviews, and transforming vague product goals into specific backend designs.

• Take ownership of backend reliability and platform performance, encompassing staging, CI/CD, databases, queues, cost management, and observability.

• Elevate the team's capabilities through PR reviews, mentorship, and by establishing high standards for design, testing, and operations.

• Represent the Everand backend in cross-team planning and serve as the cohesive force in cross-functional execution.

• Cultivate a culture of technical excellence while promoting the development of scalable, resilient, and observable systems.

• Update legacy systems and reduce technical debt to enhance velocity and scalability.

• Collaborate with Product, Design, Analytics, and Web, Mobile, and ML Engineers to create backend systems that facilitate experimentation.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience in backend engineering, with a proven history of building and scaling distributed systems.

• Proficiency in writing clean, maintainable, and secure code in at least one modern backend programming language, such as Ruby (preferred), Scala, Go, or Python.

• Strong focus on reliability and observability, including defining SLOs, implementing metrics and alerts, and troubleshooting distributed systems.

• Demonstrated success in technical leadership: guiding architectural direction, mentoring engineers, and managing large-scale migrations or modernization initiatives.

• Capability to excel in cross-functional collaboration, effectively engaging with senior PMs, design, and ML partners.

• Passion for mentoring, sharing knowledge, and contributing to initiatives that span multiple teams.
