Staff Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in India.

📋 Description

• Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve performance bottlenecks in the dbt-core execution engine and Python codebase.

• Design and implement enhancements to the adapter interface that connects dbt with databases and data platforms.

• Diagnose system-level issues related to Linux process management, concurrency models, database query planning, and network protocols.

• Facilitate technical design discussions and contribute to the long-term architectural roadmap of dbt Core.

• Mentor fellow engineers and evaluate contributions from the open-source community.

• Maintain high standards for code quality, testing procedures, and design principles.

• Oversee distributed systems and resolve complex issues in production environments.

• Engage in an on-call rotation to ensure high availability and resilience of the platform.


⛳️ Requirements

• Minimum of 6 years of professional experience in software development with a focus on production backend systems.

• Extensive backend engineering experience and strong proficiency in Python.

• Systematic and first-principles approach to problem-solving.

• Proficient in navigating and debugging Linux environments, including process scheduling, memory management, and file systems.

• Comprehensive understanding of database internals, including query execution engines, storage layers, indexing strategies, and transaction management.

• Exceptional communication skills and a strong sense of ownership.

• Capability to balance technical depth with rapid, iterative delivery.

• Preferred: experience in data warehousing, data engineering, or analytics engineering.

• Preferred: hands-on experience with Go or Rust in production settings.

• Preferred: history of contributing to or maintaining a well-known open-source project.

• Preferred: experience in building compilers, interpreters, or developer tools.

• Preferred: familiarity with performance analysis tools such as perf or strace.
