This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Define the technical direction and take ownership of the medium-to-long-term technical strategy for the bank’s cloud infrastructure, data platform, core banking configuration, CI/CD, networking, and integration with Bank–Affirm Inc.
• Personally architect, develop, integrate, and manage complex, high-stakes systems end-to-end, including incident response, monitoring, failure domains, and runbooks.
• Establish code review, design review, documentation, architecture, and engineering standards for a small team.
• Leverage AI tools and agentic workflows for development, design review, runbook generation, and operational tasks.
• Lead the evaluation, integration, operations, escalation, and audit oversight of third-party banking, data, identity, observability, and card-processing platforms.
• Define domain boundaries, data flows, and integration models between the bank and Affirm Inc.
• Collaborate with Legal, Compliance, Risk, BSA/AML, Finance, and Internal Audit to create systems that are prepared for examination and audit processes.
• Take responsibility for reliability, observability, alerting, runbooks, incident response, disaster recovery, and operational readiness.
• Articulate technical strategy and trade-offs to executives, the Bank Board, Compliance, Risk, Finance, examiners, and engineers at Affirm.
• Mentor engineers, provide constructive feedback, assist in hiring, and contribute to team and engineering growth.
• Over 8 years of experience in software engineering.
• Proven staff-level, hands-on builder experience with ownership of complex, high-stakes systems from launch to operations.
• Capacity to navigate ambiguity, make prioritization decisions, take ownership, and balance speed with engineering judgment.
• Proficient in AI-assisted development tools, including Claude, Cursor, Codex, and agentic workflows.
• Experience in cultivating a small, lean engineering culture that prioritizes buy over build, default-deny security, and standalone operability.
• History of defining architecture and multi-quarter technical strategy, leading execution across engineering teams.
• Strong systems thinking regarding public cloud infrastructure; AWS experience preferred.
• Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code, specifically Terraform.
• Experience with cloud data platforms such as Snowflake or similar alternatives.
• Background in banking, payments, securities, healthcare, or other externally examined regulated environments, including familiarity with examiner-facing documentation and decisions.
• Expertise in selecting, integrating, and managing significant third-party platforms post-launch.
• Ability to act as the technical representative to executives, boards, Compliance, Risk, Finance, and examiners.
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
• Nice-to-have: experience in banking or fintech, participation in de novo bank launches or greenfield regulated platforms, core/card processor integrations, establishing greenfield cloud organizations, and knowledge of FDIC, GLBA/Reg P, BSA/AML, Reg E, Reg DD, Reg Z, model risk, and third-party risk management.
