Staff Software Engineer – API Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Design and construct essential infrastructure that connects services throughout Canva's backend engineering division.

• Lead a significant migration of communication between backend services.

• Collaborate with engineering partners and leadership teams.

• Promote support for additional programming languages and frameworks.

• Take ownership of the reliability, performance, and accuracy of systems critical to the engineering organization.

• Mentor fellow engineers to elevate the team's technical capabilities.

• Create and manage infrastructure for service communication, traffic management, security, and multi-language development across Canva's platform.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in building and maintaining infrastructure relied upon by other engineering teams.

• Familiarity with API gateway, RPC, or service mesh infrastructure, particularly in high-traffic and large-scale environments.

• Ability to take ownership of systems where reliability and accuracy are paramount.

• Capacity to assess trade-offs instead of opting for quick fixes.

• Skill in driving technical direction across teams without formal reporting relationships.

• Ability to communicate clearly with engineers and teams utilizing the platform.

• A strong sense of ownership over outcomes.

• Several years of experience managing large-scale, high-transaction commercial production systems.

• Experience in multiple programming languages is preferred.

• Staff-level software engineering background.

• Must be located in Australia.
