Staff Software Development Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama, +44 more states.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and sustain backend microservices utilizing Java/JEE and Spring Boot.

• Create secure, high-performance, and resilient RESTful APIs.

• Implement event-driven architectures using Apache Kafka, including producers, consumers, schema evolution, partitioning, and consumer groups.

• Model and exchange data in JSON format with thorough validation, versioning, and backward compatibility.

• Construct and maintain CI/CD pipelines that include testing, static analysis, artifact promotion, and progressive delivery.

• Collaborate with Security and DevOps teams to integrate automated security controls.

• Deploy and manage services on Google Cloud Platform utilizing GKE or Cloud Run, IAM, and managed data services.

• Apply 12-factor app principles, along with infrastructure-as-code and configuration management practices.

• Integrate backend services with EHR systems and comply with healthcare data standards such as HL7 v2, FHIR, SMART on FHIR, and CCD/C-CDA.

• Ensure compliance with HIPAA, data governance, encryption, and platform security protocols.

• Take ownership of production readiness, availability, latency, throughput, and cost efficiency for high-volume backend services.

• Diagnose production issues, conduct root cause analysis, and implement reliability enhancements utilizing SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets.

• Implement structured logging, metrics, and tracing for effective monitoring and incident response.

• Engage in architecture reviews, code reviews, and technical design discussions.

• Mentor junior engineers.

• Collaborate with product, architecture, security, and DevOps teams to deliver healthcare integrations and platform services.

⛳️ Requirements

• 7+ years of professional software development experience with Java/JEE and Spring Boot.

• 5+ years of experience in building RESTful microservices and distributed systems.

• Strong knowledge of REST API design, JSON data modeling, and OpenAPI/Swagger documentation.

• 5+ years of hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and containerized workloads.

• Docker experience is required; Kubernetes experience is preferred.

• 3+ years of experience operating production services in cloud environments, preferably GCP.

• 3+ years of experience with Kafka or similar event-streaming technologies.

• 3+ years of knowledge of security fundamentals, including OAuth2/OIDC, TLS, and secrets management.

• Strong debugging, performance profiling, and operational troubleshooting capabilities.

• Experience in healthcare, regulated systems, or large-scale data integration platforms.

• Cloud certification is preferred.

• Familiarity with Spanner, BigQuery, Cloud SQL, or comparable managed data services.

• Familiarity with observability, monitoring, and alerting tools such as Grafana and Splunk.

• Certification as a Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) is a plus.

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (HS diploma + 4 years of relevant experience).
