Staff Design Systems Engineer

📋 Description

• Develop, enhance, and deliver reusable and accessible components, tokens, and interaction patterns that empower teams to create consistent, high-quality experiences across web and mobile platforms.

• Contribute code to production and assist Product Designers in their coding efforts through the use of agentic coding tools (Claude Code, custom internal tools).

• Set LLM guidelines that align with the design system, enabling engineers and designers to swiftly generate and implement designs and prototypes that conform to the design system.

• Produce internal documentation and configure/create internal tools to assist Product Designers of varying technical skill levels in integrating generative AI tools into our daily workflows, which allows us to directly enhance and evolve the user-facing experience.

• Define and uphold Niche’s visual language, guideline documentation, and component libraries, covering typography, color, iconography, and UI patterns, for both human users and AI agents (similar to Stitch’s Design.md).

• Enhance the contribution model so that teams can efficiently propose, create, and scale new components based on actual product use cases.

• Monitor the latest tools and resources, remain informed about available options, and recommend tools to adopt while being cautious of hype cycles.

• Transparently identify risks associated with reliance on AI tools, find a balance between immediate gains and long-term investments, and provide guidance on what humans excel at versus where agents can assist.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 6 years of relevant experience, with a proven record of shaping design system vision/strategy and driving adoption.

• Frequent user of LLMs such as Claude or ChatGPT in your daily workflow; you possess AI projects that you are eager to share that relate to this role.

• Skilled with modern design tools (Figma, design tokens, component libraries, sandboxes/repos, prototyping tools) and have a strong perspective on their future direction.

• Strong technical knowledge: we utilize React, Typescript, and Storybook; you should also understand how to work with APIs and automation platforms, navigate performance trade-offs, and connect systems effectively.

• A keen eye for recognizing exceptional design craftsmanship, with attention to detail across component states, interaction patterns, visual consistency, and compliance with accessibility standards (WCAG AA).

• Actively participate in design critiques, representing not only the design systems perspective but also how to leverage AI tools to achieve optimal user experiences.

• Eager to experiment with Claude Cowork, Paper.design, and other AI tools that facilitate design-to-code and code-to-design transitions beyond Figma.

• Effectively prioritize your time across teams and projects, manage high-urgency tasks simultaneously, and advise on focus areas to maximize impact.

• Self-motivated individual who employs excellent communication and collaboration skills to act as a strategic operator: identify root issues, diagnose them, propose solutions, or implement fixes independently.

• Possess resilience and adaptability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment characterized by frequent changes and significant ambiguity.
