Staff Design Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +2 more locations.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the design system strategy and roadmap: articulate the system's future direction, prioritize objectives, establish governance, and develop a sustainable contribution model as the team and product expand.

• Establish the AI enablement strategy for design-to-engineering: assess how AI tools can be incorporated into the workflow from prototyping to production, and create systems that enhance the overall speed and quality of the team.

• Define the technical direction for UI quality across the product: clarify what excellence looks like, set the standards and processes to uphold it, and advocate for this standard among design and engineering leadership.

• Recognize systemic quality gaps: analyze the product surface to identify patterns that have been overlooked, and develop a plan to address these issues.

• Create the infrastructure that empowers designers to implement code: not by executing the tasks yourself, but by establishing workflows, tools, and templates that integrate sustainably into the design team's practice.

• Collaborate with Design and Engineering leadership to influence the long-term vision of their collaboration, delineate boundaries, and facilitate their evolution.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of experience in design and front-end engineering, showcasing a portfolio that highlights both craftsmanship and leadership influence.

• Demonstrated success in building and scaling design systems: managing the roadmap, governance, and adoption strategy within a product organization, beyond merely contributing components.

• A strong, well-supported perspective on what constitutes an exceptional design system, evidenced by experience in driving its adoption within a product organization: not only developing it but also motivating designers and engineers to utilize it effectively.

• Profound front-end engineering expertise (TypeScript, React, CSS) combined with a genuine design sensibility. Proficient in reading and writing production code, yet leading through discernment rather than mere output.

• Experience in defining technical strategies for design tooling, enhancing developer experience, or optimizing design-to-engineering workflows.

• Familiarity with the impact of AI tools on team-level design and engineering workflows, coupled with the ability to construct systems or processes that accommodate these changes.

• Strong communication and persuasive abilities: capable of aligning design leadership, engineering leadership, and product teams around a unified technical direction without formal authority.

• Proficient with AI-powered coding tools (Cursor, Claude Code, v0.dev, or similar) as an integral part of your daily workflow.
