This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.
• Provide technical guidance throughout the team and related teams.
• Address the most significant and intricate challenges within the domain.
• Spearhead large-scale, cross-functional backend projects.
• Propel modular architecture initiatives and establish engineering standards.
• Collaborate with Product, Frontend, Infrastructure, Security, Data, Engineering Managers, and engineers across various product groups.
• Oversee the technical design and execution of backend projects that involve multiple teams.
• Identify and eliminate systemic bottlenecks within product and infrastructure teams.
• Upgrade monolithic and legacy backends towards modular, reusable, and independently functioning systems.
• Set standards for APIs, contracts, compatibility, schema evolution, testing, security, performance, observability, operability, and maintainability.
• Develop patterns for dependency management, data ownership, eventing, failure isolation, service maturity, and operational documentation.
• Establish Go service patterns and Kubernetes operating procedures; support Rust adoption where relevant.
• Engage in on-call duties and incident management.
• Serve as a technical escalation point during complex incidents.
• Collaborate with Product and Engineering leadership on platform roadmaps and investment considerations.
• Mentor Senior and Intermediate engineers.
• Promote the use of AI-assisted and agentic workflows while defining quality, security, privacy, and operational guidelines.
• Proven track record of technical leadership across multiple teams or a broad product area.
• Extensive backend architecture and production experience in complex applications, services, or platforms.
• Experience in scaling or managing APIs, service platforms, data systems, modular monoliths, or shared backend components.
• Experience in modernizing a monolithic or legacy backend architecture in a production environment.
• Familiarity with modular architecture concepts such as bounded contexts, package encapsulation, ports and adapters, service extraction, event-driven boundaries, or similar methodologies.
• Ability to foster alignment through clear written proposals and decision documentation.
• Capability to balance customer outcomes, delivery speed, technical integrity, reliability, and long-term platform investment.
• Experience mentoring engineers and influencing standards through code reviews, documentation, and exemplary practices.
• Production experience with AI-assisted or agentic engineering workflows.
• Beneficial experience with Go services and APIs on a large scale.
• Beneficial experience with Kubernetes and cloud-native operations.
• Beneficial experience with Rust adoption or production responsibilities.
• Beneficial experience with Ruby/Rails modularization and modernization of large monoliths.
• Beneficial experience with PostgreSQL scaling, data partitioning, queues, messaging, or distributed systems.
• Beneficial experience in security-sensitive product development or software supply chain engineering.
• Beneficial experience across SaaS, single-tenant, self-managed, or air-gapped deployment scenarios.
