This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +1 more country.
• Establish the technical vision for the team's agentic systems, encompassing agent orchestration and human-operated processes.
• Identify and prioritize challenges throughout GitLab's software development lifecycle, driving solutions from hypothesis to completed, measurable outcomes.
• Navigate GitLab's codebase as necessary based on the challenges at hand.
• Utilize distributed systems expertise to evaluate generated code concerning concurrency, scalability, and deployment architectures.
• Provide mentorship to senior and mid-level engineers through design reviews and collaborative programming sessions.
• Engage with the India-based team multiple times a week to ensure alignment on the roadmap.
• Communicate technical advancements to stakeholders within the CTO organization.
• Lead the Technical Leadership hiring process for Staff-level candidates.
• Oversee the foundational technical groundwork as the team expands.
• Proven experience in developing reliable agentic systems or large language model (LLM)-based solutions, including multi-step orchestration, tool utilization, guardrails, and recovery processes.
• Capacity to operate independently within unfamiliar codebases and drive solutions from initial discovery to final implementation.
• Solid understanding of distributed systems and computer science principles, including coordination, consistency, idempotency, rate limiting, failure modes, and performance degradation under load.
• Proficient in Go, Rust, or Python, with the ability to read and modify code in other languages.
• History of achieving results despite unclear or incomplete requirements.
• Experience in designing evaluation frameworks that differentiate between plausible and correct outputs.
• Proven ability to elevate the quality of a team's deliverables.
• Background in unblocking and empowering team members through design reviews, technical documentation, or mentorship.
