This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.
• Track significant developments in education law at both state and federal levels, evaluating their effects on students, families, schools, and communities.
• Enhance and broaden IDRA’s coalition amicus advocacy by pinpointing strategic cases, performing legal and factual research, drafting briefs, coordinating amici, and collaborating with counsel and community partners.
• Conduct legal intakes and manage referrals related to education-focused civil rights issues while identifying trends that inform broader legal, policy, or community advocacy.
• Formulate legal strategies in collaboration with impacted communities.
• Develop and deliver know-your-rights training sessions and accessible legal resources.
• Research and draft model education policies that safeguard students’ civil rights and foster safe, inclusive, and equitable educational environments.
• Train and coordinate volunteer attorneys, law students, and community advocates.
• Provide legal guidance to IDRA’s policy and advocacy teams, including assessments of legislation, regulations, agency actions, and emerging legal issues.
• Assist in community-focused responses to civil rights infringements.
• Represent IDRA in state, regional, and national coalitions committed to civil rights, education justice, and robust public schooling.
• Proven experience in movement lawyering, community lawyering, or other community-focused legal advocacy methods.
• Background in collaborating with organizers and communities directly impacted by legal issues.
• Experience in developing legal strategies that respond to priorities defined by the community.
• Proven track record of supporting campaigns aimed at systemic change.
• Familiarity with using litigation, administrative advocacy, and policy efforts as interrelated tools within broader justice movements.
• Preference for candidates located in or near central Texas, particularly in the San Antonio or Austin metro regions.
