This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama.
• Lead a well-established group of 8 to 10 software engineers within the JRE software development division.
• Oversee engineer evaluations, professional growth, daily leadership, and their career advancement.
• Conduct one-on-one meetings, devise development strategies, provide constructive feedback, manage performance, and advocate for future leads and senior technical contributors.
• Foster trust, psychological safety, inclusivity, sustainable workload practices, and effective norms for distributed teams.
• Take charge of the team's execution on priorities and sprint plans, which includes staffing, skill coverage, workflow management, code review, test automation, CI/CD, definition of done, and readiness for release.
• Collaborate with product management and the product owner regarding capacity, staffing risks, sprint planning, and delivery outcomes.
• Identify technical debt, modernization requirements, scheduling risks, staffing challenges, and technical vulnerabilities.
• Eliminate obstacles and organizational friction; engage in incident reviews and conduct blameless post-mortems.
• Convey leadership context to the team and report on the team's progress, concerns, and requirements to management.
• Work alongside architects, product management, systems engineering, program management, quality assurance, security, and government stakeholders.
• Navigate contentious discussions and mediate interpersonal and cross-team conflicts.
• Recruit, interview, assess, onboard, and assist in shaping the structure and composition of the team.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related discipline, with 9+ years of applicable experience; 7+ years for a Master’s; or 4+ years for a Doctorate; relevant experience may substitute for a degree.
• At least 3 years of direct experience in people management or formal leadership of software engineers.
• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Must be eligible to obtain a Secret clearance or higher after starting the position.
• Proven experience in managing software engineers, including performance evaluations, career development, challenging performance discussions, and personnel issues.
• Experience overseeing distributed or entirely remote engineering teams across various time zones.
• Background in managing engineers within a broader engineering organization in conjunction with architecture, product, and systems engineering.
• Capacity to maintain trust, accountability, high standards, and open feedback.
• Proficient in facilitating and resolving high-stakes discussions and competing interests.
• Experience leading software teams that deliver complex, mission-critical, or highly reliable systems.
• Experience collaborating with product management or a product owner on capacity, staffing, and delivery risks.
• Professional software engineering experience encompassing design discussions, technical trade-offs, risk assessment, technical debt, and throughput knowledge.
• Proficiency with version control workflows, code review, test automation, CI/CD, and agile iterative delivery methodologies.
• Familiarity with distributed systems, secure development practices, reliability, performance, maintainability, and operability.
• Desired: experience in defense/DoD program environments, FAR, DISA STIGs, NIST SP 800-171, Java/JVM programming languages, modernization or refactoring, leadership training or coaching credentials, and contributions to the engineering leadership community.
