Software Engineer II – App Core

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Assist in constructing and maintaining the core infrastructure that underpins Smartsheet. Play a key role in fostering a reliable, stable, and high-performance environment expected by all users.

• Collaborate closely with the team daily in a real-time development setting. Engage actively as both a driver and navigator by posing questions, sharing insights, and contributing directly to the collective code ownership of the team.

• Delve into system internals. With the support of your team, you will help manage and upgrade large-scale database infrastructures, maintain intricate replication topologies, and automate essential operations using AWS, Golang, MySQL, Terraform, Temporal, and GitLab-CI.

• Employ Test-Driven Development (TDD) to guarantee that our foundational systems are robust before they reach production. In addition to coding, you will actively participate in team book clubs and psychologically safe retrospectives to continuously enhance our work processes.

• Share accountability for the operational health of our systems as part of a supportive on-call rotation. You will gradually be integrated with guidance from experienced teammates.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proficient in at least one modern programming language with experience in backend development. While Go experience is advantageous, it is not mandatory—we will provide training. Backgrounds in Java or Python are highly applicable.

• A strong eagerness to learn Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and a willingness to gain knowledge about database internals and reliability (MySQL).

• A genuine interest in team-focused engineering practices. You should feel comfortable (or be eager to become comfortable) working predominantly in a mob programming environment, writing test-driven code, and sharing system ownership.

• A critical thinker who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and aims to comprehend how large-scale systems maintain stability and scalability.

• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the confidence to inquire, engage in group discussions, and express thoughts collaboratively with your team.

• A BS or MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent capability).

• Legally authorized to work in the United States on an ongoing basis.
