Software Engineer, Automation and Control

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Design, construct, and sustain automation systems for bioreactor and bioprocessing activities.

• Adjust and troubleshoot real-world control loops, identifying issues such as oscillation, lag, overshoot, and instability.

• Enhance automation reliability through monitoring, logging, fault detection, and recovery strategies.

• Develop the AsyncAPI hardware interface to enable higher-level automation and AI systems to safely interact with physical equipment.

• Refine existing control-loop tuning and address failure modes.

• Create and optimize new feedback control systems, including PID loops, focusing on stability, performance, and robustness.

• Develop software interfaces for sensors, actuators, embedded controllers, and orchestration systems.

• Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, process, and software engineers to translate requirements into dependable control implementations.

• Acquire knowledge about biotechnology and bioprocess development.

⛳️ Requirements

• Minimum of 4 years of industry experience, with at least 2 years in software development.

• Practical understanding of sensors, actuators, and data acquisition, including knowledge of failure modes.

• Solid grasp of classical control theory, particularly PID control, feedback loops, stability, response tuning, and disturbance rejection.

• Ability to maintain strong working relationships with scientists and translate process requirements into control logic.

• Technical diligence in testing assumptions, validating behavior against data, and comprehending failure modes.

• Strong systems thinking capability and the ability to operate across hardware and software domains.

• Experience in robotics, manufacturing automation, biotech automation, or other intricate electromechanical systems (preferred).

• Professional background in software engineering, including CI and automated testing (preferred).

• Familiarity with AWS, Docker, infrastructure as code, or connected edge devices (preferred).

• Exposure to regulated environments (GLP/GMP, ISO) (preferred).

• Understanding of sampling, filtering, sensor noise, and actuator constraints (preferred).
