This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maine.

📋 Description

• Lead a small, highly effective agile engineering team (typically consisting of 3–5 developers), taking ownership of the team's delivery, quality, and overall well-being.

• Oversee and mentor the engineers on your team by conducting regular one-on-ones, establishing clear expectations, providing honest and timely feedback, supporting career development, and carrying out performance evaluations.

• Recruit, onboard, and retain exceptional engineering talent, creating a team culture that emphasizes inclusion, high standards, and continuous learning.

• Drive results by converting product strategy into a clear delivery plan, segmenting work into achievable milestones, eliminating blockers, and holding the team accountable for committed outcomes.

• Collaborate closely with product owners and product management to define priorities, scope, and trade-offs that balance customer value, technical integrity, and delivery speed.

• Stay hands-on by contributing significantly to design discussions, code reviews, prototypes, and complex problem-solving throughout the full web application stack (typically dedicating around 30–50% of your time).

• Lead technical discussions and decisions, influencing architecture and design both within your team and across squads.

• Plan, document, and communicate technical projects — including status updates, risks, and key decisions — to engineering peers, product partners, and senior leadership.

• Work together with DevOps and other technical teams to plan, develop, and release high-quality software, as well as to streamline CI/CD workflows using tools like Jenkins and GitHub Actions.

• Utilize AI-assisted development tools (e.g., LLM-based coding assistants and agents) to enhance your team's velocity, code quality, and design exploration — while helping to establish responsible and effective usage patterns.

• Take responsibility for the operational health of your team’s systems, collaborating with the team to address and resolve build failures, deployment errors, production incidents, and pipeline issues as they occur.

• Cultivate a culture of innovation, inclusion, psychological safety, and thoughtful risk-taking — creating an environment where engineers can perform at their best.

⛳️ Requirements

• Experience in people leadership — you have managed or led engineers (as a formal manager, team lead, or similar role) and genuinely enjoy nurturing the development of your team members.

• A strong sense of drive, ownership, and results orientation — you establish clear goals, prioritize tasks, and fulfill commitments without compromising quality.

• Exceptional analytical, verbal, and written communication skills, including the ability to convey technical topics to non-technical audiences and to listen attentively across functions.

• Strong instincts for product partnership — you work closely with product owners, ask insightful questions, and contribute to shaping outcomes rather than merely executing tasks.

• A solid hands-on technical background as a software engineer, maintaining credibility in design and code reviews, and the capability to contribute directly when necessary.

• Comprehensive knowledge of the full web application stack and a solid grasp of technologies ranging from the database to the presentation layer.

• Proficient in PHP, Node.js, and/or other object-oriented and procedural programming languages, as well as the AWS Platform, REST APIs, and data modeling.

• Experience in designing system architectures and coordinating teams to design, code, test, and document significant system changes.

• Familiarity with relational databases and Structured Query Language (SQL), along with experience in Object-Relational Mapping (ORM) frameworks.

• Knowledge of AI-powered coding assistants and agents (e.g., Cursor or similar) and a clear understanding of their strengths, limitations, and potential failure modes.

• Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle, agile methodologies, and modern CI/CD practices utilizing tools such as Jenkins and GitHub Actions.

• Experience in hiring and maintaining a high standard for engineering talent — you can identify, attract, and nurture strong engineers.

• Ability to balance competing priorities across personnel, delivery, and technical health, making pragmatic trade-offs in uncertain situations.

• Well-rounded business and company knowledge, with the ability to link engineering efforts back to customer and business outcomes.
