This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• The Social Emergency Response Service (previously known as the Crisis Response Program) Contract Worker is deployed to First Nations communities served by the Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority, delivering crisis intervention and support to families affected by tragic events within their household (e.g. suicide, homicide, tragic accidents, etc.).

• Contractual counselors/traditional workers and volunteer teams from surrounding communities respond to requests for assistance during times of crisis.

• The Social Emergency Response Service personnel provide individual and family counseling, and may also incorporate more traditional support methods.

• They are also tasked with facilitating group debriefings for community members, leadership, and service providers upon request.

• The contracted workers report to the Manager of the Social Emergency Response Service.

• The individual must be prepared to travel from within Northwestern Ontario on short notice to assist communities in crisis.


⛳️ Requirements

• A Graduate or Undergraduate Degree in Psychology or Social Work is preferred, along with substantial clinical experience in crisis response, critical incidents, and trauma.

• A certificate or diploma in one of the mental health disciplines may be considered with equivalent clinical experience, including those who adopt a more traditional healing approach.

• Completion of specialized training in areas such as crisis intervention, mental health assessment and intervention, suicide intervention, trauma-informed care, and grief and loss is required.

• Proven experience working with individuals facing crisis situations (e.g. suicide, homicide, and other traumatic events).

• Exceptional clinical assessment and crisis intervention/counseling abilities.

• Demonstrated strong assessment, organizational, and prioritization skills, with the capacity to thrive in high-stress environments.

• Innovative problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.

• Experience in debriefing both individuals and groups.

• Outstanding communication and interpersonal/team-building skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with all levels of community-based staff and members.

• Must complete all required program documentation.

• Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, alongside a strong capacity for collaboration with key community stakeholders.

• Understanding of First Nations culture, history (including intergenerational trauma), geographic realities, mental health priorities, and social conditions in remote First Nations communities.

• Experience working with First Nations individuals and within northern communities is advantageous.

• Proficiency in one of the First Nations dialects of the Sioux Lookout region is an asset.

• Flexibility in working hours is necessary; willingness to travel on short notice and stay in a community for typically five days or longer is required.
