Senior Substation Project Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois, +8 more states.

📋 Description

• Oversee intricate substation engineering projects from the estimation and proposal phase through detailed design, equipment procurement, construction bidding, commissioning, and energization support.

• Review and generate physical substation design drawings, including general arrangements, elevations, equipment connection details, grounding plans, conduit plans, control building layouts, foundation plans, and material lists.

• Conduct grounding, lightning protection, battery bank sizing, conduit fill, substation sizing, and AC/DC substation studies and calculations.

• Review and create one-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel elevations.

• Collaborate with civil/structural, protection and controls, automation, project management, and other multidisciplinary teams.

• Perform site visits, walkthroughs, estimating, and scoping meetings.

• Ensure that engineering practices adhere to standards, regulatory requirements, and technological advancements.

• Assist in process and design enhancements and business development efforts.

• Monitor project quality, measurements, revenue forecasts, budgets, and timelines.

• Mentor, train, and oversee junior EITs and designers.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program or equivalent.

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

• Professional Engineer registration through examination is mandatory.

• Possession of a Professional Engineer license.

• 6–10 years of substation engineering experience, preferably in an engineering consulting firm.

• Experience in producing and reviewing civil/structural, physical, or protection and control design drawings for substation projects.

• Proficient in substation protection and control design and familiar with industry standards.

• Willingness and ability to travel up to 15% within the continental U.S.

• Valid driver’s license with no restrictions.

• Ability to work independently and manage or supervise junior EITs and/or designers.

• Knowledgeable in grounding, lightning protection, battery bank sizing, conduit fill, AC/DC substation studies, and substation sizing calculations.
