Senior Structural Engineer – Substation Focus

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Colorado.

📋 Description

• Assist in AECOM’s Energy Practice Power Delivery Initiative.

• Serve as the structural lead and engineer of record for projects involving substations, switchyards, and electrical infrastructure.

• Conduct engineering calculations and create analytical models for the design of structural steel and concrete.

• Collaborate with Project Engineers and Project Managers to forecast workloads, design timelines, and civil/structural budgets.

• Support proposal efforts by providing task and effort estimates.

• Contribute to the business development strategy related to substations and high-voltage electrical infrastructure.

• Work alongside civil/structural design teams to ensure the timely completion of engineering drawings.

• Partner with various disciplines on general arrangements, vendor procurement packages, and related deliverables.

• Develop, revise, and implement standards specific to the group.

• Prepare technical reports, presentations, specifications, and contract documents.

• Review and verify the work of peers and team members.

• Provide mentorship to civil/structural engineers and aid in the development of departmental standards.

• Travel occasionally to AECOM locations and client sites.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field, along with 6 years of relevant experience, or a demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

• Professional Engineering Licensure (PE) is required.

• Proven experience in structural design for both overhead and underground transmission and distribution systems.

• Experience with substation projects is essential.

• A preference for 10 years of experience, including at least 3 years as the structural engineering lead/engineer of record on projects.

• In-depth knowledge of industry codes and standards such as NESC, G.O.95, ASCE 113, ASCE 10, ASCE 48, IEEE 605, IEEE 693, AISC 360, ASCE 7, IBC, ACI 318, RUS, ASCE design guidelines, and NEC.

• Experience in participating in complex, multi-discipline programs/projects and CAD teams.

• Familiarity with executing work in 3D model environments.

• Professional experience in modeling, analyzing, and designing steel structures and foundations.

• Experience with various voltage levels, including 4kV, 12kV, 138kV, 230kV, and 500kV.

• Proficiency in PLS-CADD software packages, including PLS-Tower and PLS-Pole.

• Experience with structural analysis and design tools such as Staad.PRO, SAP2000, MFAD, and L-Pile.

• Experience in collaborating with remote teams.

• Experience managing full EPC and Design/Build projects from inception to completion.

• Owner’s Engineering experience is preferred.

• Experience with retrofit or brownfield projects is a plus.

• Occasional travel to other AECOM locations and client sites is required.
