This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.
• Take ownership of the technical strategy and architecture for sourcing, preparing, and validating geospatial datasets across designated regions.
• Lead the resolution of complex, high-impact GIS engineering challenges that involve multiple data modalities, systems, and teams.
• Establish standards and measurable controls for data coverage, freshness, quality, provenance, licensing, reliability, and cost.
• Assess open, public-domain, and commercial sensor data sources while providing technical guidance for provider selection and data partnerships.
• Design scalable geospatial processing systems using both open-source and internally developed tools.
• Create and oversee automated post-processing workflows for outputs from geospatial AI/ML pipelines.
• Actively contribute to the development of internal software and tools utilized for sourcing, processing, cataloging, and distributing geospatial datasets.
• Collaborate with AI/ML teams to anticipate data needs for model development and ensure access to suitable datasets.
• Work alongside Pipeline and Product teams to establish data requirements, technical interfaces, quality thresholds, and criteria for launch readiness.
• Lead technical design reviews and facilitate alignment on architecture, trade-offs, sequencing, and risks.
• Mentor engineers, share domain knowledge, and establish best engineering practices.
• Communicate technical decisions, dependencies, and risks to engineering leaders, product partners, and stakeholders.
• Collaborate with leadership to align product vision with a practical geospatial data and technology roadmap.
• Master's degree in GIS, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Over 8 years of relevant industry experience.
• Extensive experience in designing and delivering production geospatial data systems within a dynamic technology environment.
• Proven track record of technical leadership across intricate, cross-functional initiatives.
• In-depth knowledge of geospatial modalities, formats, coordinate systems, and processing techniques.
• Experience working with raster data types including orthoimagery, land cover, DTM, DSM, and DEM data.
• Familiarity with point clouds, particularly LiDAR-sourced LAS/LAZ data.
• Knowledge of vector data formats such as Shapefile, GeoJSON, and OSM.
• Strong background in software engineering and system design for scalable, maintainable, and automated data processing systems.
• Advanced proficiency in Python for production automation, data processing, tooling, testing, and software integration.
• Experience in assessing geospatial data quality, coverage, provenance, licensing constraints, and downstream fitness.
• Ability to effectively communicate technical strategies and trade-offs.
• Experience in integrating LLM-assisted development tools into a Geospatial Engineering workflow when applicable.
• Desired: Familiarity with GDAL and PROJ.
• Desired: Experience with Linux and bash.
• Desired: Knowledge of cloud-based or distributed data processing workflows.
• Desired: Exposure to data catalogs, lineage, metadata, validation frameworks, monitoring, and production pipeline support.
• Desired: Experience with geospatial data for machine learning, computer vision, simulation, digital twins, or large-scale interactive applications.
