Senior Staff Data Engineer, Foundational Data

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama, +15 more states.

📋 Description

• Provide technical leadership for data engineering and analytics engineering projects related to cloud costs, traffic and bots, and infrastructure intelligence.

• Define and take ownership of a multi-year data strategy and architecture for Airbnb's core data assets.

• Foster cross-organizational agreement to secure funding and implement the data strategy.

• Manage the measurement of AI unit economics, including training and serving costs, GPU fleet utilization, and the adoption of developer AI tools.

• Design and create datasets that combine cost, utilization, performance, and reliability indicators across infrastructure fleets.

• Develop and sustain Airflow-orchestrated pipelines to ingest telemetry, logs, and billing data.

• Create dimensional models and Minerva definitions utilized throughout Airbnb.

• Remain actively engaged in pipelines and models to identify design and implementation challenges.

• Mentor and influence distributed Data Engineers and Analytics Engineers through design and code reviews.

• Establish frameworks and automated checks that are adopted by other teams.

• Address conflicting requirements among Infrastructure, Finance, Data Science, and Product Engineering teams.

• Reduce duplication and data fragmentation while facilitating the deprecation of outdated models.

• Be part of the on-call rotation for the datasets you manage.

⛳️ Requirements

• 12+ years of relevant industry experience with a BS/Masters, or 9+ years with a PhD, in data engineering or a closely related area.

• Proven experience in designing, building, and operating production data pipelines at scale.

• Proficient in SQL and Python.

• Scala experience is beneficial but not mandatory.

• Capability to design dimensional models and establish trusted metrics.

• Ability to quickly become effective in unfamiliar data or technical domains.

• Experience acting as a technical lead while coding and influencing others without formal authority.

• History of writing multi-year technical strategies and obtaining organizational funding and execution.

• Experience creating data products without an existing schema or precedent and driving their adoption.

• Proficiency in aligning teams on contentious technical decisions and articulating data models to finance partners and engineers.

• Must reside in a U.S. state where Airbnb Payments, Inc. is registered: Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, or Washington.
