Senior Software Engineer – Platform Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the complete architecture, design, and implementation of Java and Spring Boot microservices across the platform.

• Define and promote the target-state architecture, service boundaries, and upgrade paths, ensuring thorough documentation for both engineering and stakeholder audiences.

• Lead the process of breaking down legacy PHP/Symfony monolith functionalities into robust, independently deployable Java services.

• Design and create AWS-native solutions utilizing ECS/Fargate, SQS, SNS, S3, Lambda, API Gateway, and Parameter Store.

• Develop and maintain secure REST APIs that include validation, error handling, authentication, and authorization.

• Drive the modernization of identity systems, focusing on OAuth2/OIDC and the migration from LDAP to Okta.

• Design and enhance data access layers using JPA/Hibernate, addressing ORM mappings, schema evolution, index strategies, and query optimization.

• Establish standards for unit and integration testing, CI/CD pipelines, observability, logging, and alerting.

• Collaborate with QA, DevOps, Product, Architecture, and Regulatory teams to deliver compliant, production-ready software.

• Mentor engineers through code reviews, design reviews, and knowledge sharing sessions.

• Oversee technical planning and execution of complex, multi-sprint initiatives, identifying delivery risks early.

• Diagnose and resolve production issues that impact service performance, stability, and reliability.

• Maintain compliance with SOX and HIPAA requirements.

• Perform additional duties as assigned.

⛳️ Requirements

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong emphasis on backend development.

• Expert-level knowledge in Java and Spring Boot, with extensive experience in distributed systems.

• Proven track record of decomposing monolithic applications into microservices.

• Practical experience with AWS services, including ECS/Fargate, SQS, SNS, S3, Lambda, API Gateway, and IAM.

• Strong understanding of REST API design, authentication and authorization patterns, and enterprise integration.

• Significant experience with relational databases (MySQL/Aurora) and ORM frameworks like Hibernate/JPA, including query optimization.

• Proficient in Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud-native delivery methodologies.

• Demonstrated ability to lead technical direction and mentor engineers at various levels.

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or an equivalent field.

• Excellent communication, problem-solving, and architectural decision-making abilities.

• Experience with Okta or similar identity providers.

• Basic knowledge of PHP/Symfony sufficient to refactor legacy functionalities.

• Experience with Kubernetes, Terraform, or similar infrastructure-as-code tools.

• Familiarity with Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) practices.

• Ability to adhere to SOX and HIPAA requirements in a regulated healthcare setting.
