
Senior Software Engineer – Machine Learning Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Develop, maintain, and enhance Upstart’s machine learning and simulation platform.
• Create software applications that empower ML models to adapt to changing business requirements.
• Construct self-service tools for ML feature registration and autonomous model deployment.
• Provide feature infrastructure encompassing definition, storage, serving, and offline-to-online consistency.
• Design and contribute to simulation systems that accurately represent production environments.
• Lower simulation costs and facilitate wider usage across different teams.
• Collaborate with partners in ML, Engineering, Product, and Data Engineering.
• Guide engineers in areas such as distributed systems, MLOps, and scalable architecture.
• Over 6 years of experience in software engineering.
• Proven experience in building and maintaining backend software services and APIs.
• Familiarity with distributed systems or large-scale data processing using Spark, Databricks, Ray, or similar technologies.
• Experience with an ML platform or ML production workflow, including training pipelines, model serving, feature pipelines, or a training data platform.
• Proficient in one or more of the following: Python, Kotlin, Databricks, and AWS.
• Capable of swiftly understanding complex requirements and conveying them to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Preferred: Experience with Metaflow, MLflow, gRPC, Spark/PySpark, dbt, Ray, and GPU technologies.
• Preferred: Understanding of simulation, experimentation, or backtesting systems.
• Preferred: Background in developing self-service or configuration-driven tools for internal users.
• Preferred: Strong quantitative reasoning abilities.
• Preferred: High levels of ownership and accountability.
• Preferred: Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Preferred: Ability to excel in both self-directed and collaborative environments.
