Senior Software Engineer, Infrastructure

📋 Description

• Take ownership of core platform services and oversee major migrations from proposal to production.

• Lead extensive migrations of stateful, business-critical systems while ensuring no downtime is visible to customers.

• Manage containerized workloads and the delivery processes associated with them, including orchestration, scheduling, GitOps-style deployments, progressive rollout and rollback, and service mesh.

• Introduce Kubernetes practices to a team currently utilizing Nomad and assist in determining the appropriate use of schedulers.

• Design and manage the AWS foundation, covering multi-account governance, IAM, cross-account access, VPC, Transit Gateway, PrivateLink, DNS, certificates, and egress paths.

• Administer identity, secrets, and encryption infrastructure, which includes workload identity, least privilege, SSO, OIDC, machine-to-machine credentials, Vault, and key ownership and rotation.

• Oversee stateful systems, which encompass database upgrades and replication, message brokers, caches, time-series stores, backups, and validated restores.

• Create deep observability through distributed tracing, metrics, SLOs, and testing frameworks.

• Streamline monitoring tools and establish monitoring in code to enhance on-call operations.

• Develop infrastructure as code and developer tools using Terraform, GitHub, Buildkite, Docker, Nomad, and internal tools.

• Transition manually created infrastructure to code, identify drift, and synchronize code with the existing infrastructure.

• Construct secure infrastructure and guardrails for AI-assisted development and access to internal systems.

• Collaborate with seasoned engineers on backend solutions, APIs, data pipelines, customer interfaces, and systems that support grid decarbonization.

⛳️ Requirements

• Strong experience in production software development using Go and/or Python.

• Approximately 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, with several years focused on DevOps / SRE managing production systems.

• Proven experience owning deployments and being accountable for reliability and on-call duties.

• A history of managing significant infrastructure projects end to end, ideally including stateful or business-critical system migrations with minimal disruption.

• Extensive AWS expertise, including multi-account organizations, IAM, cross-account access, VPC and network design, DNS, secrets management, and encryption key management.

• Understanding of provisioning versus configuration management and the principle of least privilege.

• Extensive, hands-on Kubernetes experience in a production environment, including upgrades, networking and ingress, RBAC, resource management and autoscaling, and debugging workloads under load.

• Strong skills in infrastructure-as-code using Terraform or a similar tool.

• Comprehensive monitoring and observability experience, covering metrics, alerts, dashboards as code, and distributed tracing.

• Familiarity with Prometheus, Grafana, and log/search clusters such as Elasticsearch or OpenSearch.

• Practical operational experience with relational databases and/or message brokers, including upgrades, replication changes, or restores.

• Comfort in operating and enhancing systems not originally developed by the candidate.

• Excellent communication, documentation, mentoring, and cross-team coordination skills.

• Genuine enthusiasm for AI-assisted development; experience with or eagerness to utilize tools such as Claude Code, MCP, and agents.
