Senior Software Engineer, Cloud Data Storage

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Washington.

📋 Description

• Design and develop distributed data systems, encompassing APIs, schemas, and replication pathways for resilient, queryable petabytes of workflow history.

• Document design decisions and operational knowledge necessary for the deployment and maintenance of services.

• Take ownership of service-level objectives, formulate chaos-testing plans, and analyze performance-critical pathways.

• Lead reviews of incidents.

• Decompose roadmap epics and provide mentorship to mid-level engineers.

• Guide design documents through the Request for Comments (RFC) process.

• Collaborate with Server, Cloud, and DX teams to ensure end-to-end feature delivery.

• Manage the custom persistence stack for Temporal Cloud, which includes a Write Ahead Log, metadata storage, multi-tier caches, and tiered storage.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 5 years of experience as an "Arranger" and/or "Builder/Enhancer" of highly scalable distributed systems.

• Strong foundational knowledge in computer science principles related to distributed systems, including multi-threading and concurrency.

• Proficiency in writing concurrent production code in Go, Java, or other relevant languages at an Intermediate, Advanced, or Expert level.

• Experience in building and managing services on AWS.

• Familiarity with Microsoft Azure and Google GCP is a plus.

• Previous contributions to Temporal, Cadence, or other workflow engines are advantageous.

• In-depth expertise in a storage domain such as LSM trees, columnar stores, or transactional logs is a plus.

• Experience in operating multi-region services with a minimum uptime of 99.99% is desirable.

• Experience with Open Source Systems is a bonus.

• Familiarity with building Kubernetes controllers and/or Custom Resource Definitions (CRDs) is an asset.
