This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois.
• Design and develop microservices using Java 21 and Spring Boot on Cloud Run for licensing, applications and renewals, case management, payments, documents, and notifications.
• Take ownership of the platform's API surface; define it using OpenAPI, ensure stable contracts for mobile, frontend, and integration teams, and manage version changes without disrupting consumers.
• Implement persistence with PostgreSQL (AlloyDB), focusing on row-level data isolation, search indexing, and migration strategies.
• Create asynchronous event flows utilizing Pub/Sub and Eventarc, and publish domain events for other services and the integration layer.
• Set up scheduled and timer-driven processing using Cloud Tasks and Cloud Scheduler, including renewal reminders, expiration sweeps, and reconciliation processes.
• Implement authentication and authorization mechanisms across the API surface, covering public applicant access and internal staff roles.
• Develop payment workflows, including integration with hosted payment pages and settlement reconciliation.
• Ensure compliance with platform security and requirements regarding encryption, auditability, and data isolation.
• Provide unit and integration test coverage, engage in code reviews, and support the CI/CD deployment of the services you own.
• Collaborate closely with the client technical lead, integration engineers, mobile engineers, and frontend engineers from initial project definition through to final delivery.
• A minimum of 8 years of professional backend engineering experience with Java and Spring Boot.
• Experience delivering production solutions on the Google Cloud Platform.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
• Proficiency in Java 21 and Spring Boot 3.x for microservice development.
• Experience in API design and ownership, including REST, OpenAPI specifications, versioning, pagination, error contracts, and maintaining backward compatibility.
• Knowledge of PostgreSQL, including schema design, indexing, query tuning, and versioned migrations.
• Familiarity with GCP serverless services such as Cloud Run, Pub/Sub, Cloud Tasks, and Cloud Scheduler.
• Understanding of event-driven architecture and messaging patterns, including idempotency, retries, and dead-letter handling.
• Experience with API security using OAuth 2.0 / OIDC and JWT, including role- and attribute-based authorization.
• Proficient in automated testing (JUnit, integration tests) and CI/CD practices.
• Skilled in ensuring observability of owned services through structured logging, metrics, tracing, and SLOs.
• Experience building APIs that are utilized by external partners, agencies, or public-facing applications.
• Familiarity with AlloyDB and BigQuery.
• Experience in payment processing integrations and settlement reconciliation.
• Knowledge of GraphQL or gRPC in addition to REST.
• Experience in performance and load testing of high-traffic public services.
• Possession of Google Cloud Professional certifications.
