This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Michigan, +2 more states.
β’ Oversee the architecture, design, implementation, and advancement of the foundational frameworks that support Torc's autonomous driving stack.
β’ Steer the technical direction for real-time C++ architectural components and patterns that facilitate data flow, component coordination, error handling, and observability.
β’ Establish scalable architectural patterns and abstractions while making strategic long-term platform design decisions.
β’ Collaborate with the Behavior and Perception teams to ensure clean integration boundaries and coherent shared abstractions.
β’ Lead architecture, design, and code reviews while setting engineering standards for reliability, maintainability, testability, and scalability.
β’ Provide mentorship to software engineers through technical coaching and architectural guidance.
β’ Advocate for validation, testing, observability, and production-readiness practices.
β’ Conduct root cause analysis for complex platform issues and drive enhancements in reliability, performance, and resilience.
β’ Define and refine simulation and validation frameworks for various scenarios and edge cases.
β’ Assess emerging architectural patterns, systems research, and advanced techniques.
β’ Communicate the technical vision across engineering, product, and leadership to build consensus on platform direction.
β’ Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field with 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, or a Master's degree with 6+ years of professional experience, or proven success in designing and evolving complex production software platforms while taking ownership of architectural decisions.
β’ Extensive experience with C++17 and the latest standards.
β’ Proficient in using Python for scripting and integrating systems.
β’ Experience in autonomous systems/robotics, distributed systems, or intricate embedded environments utilizing middleware with pub-sub communication patterns.
β’ Strong background in testing, continuous integration, and build systems.
β’ Comprehensive experience in systems-level software design, managing technical debt, refactoring large codebases, and evolving platforms without compromising stability and performance.
β’ Proven track record of mentoring engineers through technical leadership, architecture reviews, code reviews, and establishing scalable engineering standards.
β’ Strong command of modular/composable architecture, design patterns, concurrency, testing strategies, and long-term maintainability.
β’ Bonus: Experience in architecting, maintaining, and utilizing robotics middleware (e.g., ROS 2).
β’ Bonus: In-depth expertise in distributed systems design, consensus algorithms, state synchronization, event-driven architectures, and deterministic replay.
β’ Bonus: Familiarity with ISO 26262, SOTIF, ASPICE, or other safety-critical software development standards.
β’ Bonus: Experience with GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Bazel, observability/logging/monitoring systems, simulation-based regression testing, and data schema versioning/conversion at scale.
