Senior Software Development Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Tennessee.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, maintain, and enhance enterprise applications utilizing RPG IV, RPGLE, Free Format RPG, CLLE, SQL, and DB2 for i.

• Lead the modernization of legacy IBM i applications through modular architecture, service programs, APIs, and contemporary development practices.

• Analyze, design, code, test, implement, and support essential business applications.

• Identify and mitigate technical debt while enhancing application scalability, maintainability, and performance.

• Design and optimize DB2 for i database solutions utilizing Embedded SQL and advanced SQL capabilities.

• Develop and support APIs, web services, and integrations between IBM i and enterprise platforms.

• Troubleshoot and resolve intricate application and database performance challenges.

• Utilize AI development tools to expedite development, testing, code analysis, documentation, and modernization initiatives.

• Establish and implement AI-driven development practices that boost engineering productivity and software quality.

• Assess emerging AI technologies and pinpoint opportunities to automate software delivery processes.

• Mentor and nurture engineering team members through technical guidance, code reviews, and adherence to best practices.

• Set coding standards, documentation protocols, and quality benchmarks.

• Collaborate with business, product, infrastructure, operations, and vendor teams to deliver technology solutions that align with business goals.

• Convey technical designs, risks, dependencies, and recommendations to both technical and business stakeholders.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of experience in IBM i application development.

• Expert-level knowledge in RPG IV, RPGLE, Free Format RPG, CLLE, DB2 for i, and Embedded SQL.

• Demonstrated experience in modernizing extensive IBM i applications and mitigating technical debt.

• Proficiency in designing and developing APIs, web services, and enterprise integrations.

• Strong grasp of application architecture, design patterns, and software engineering best practices.

• Experience in mentoring developers and providing technical leadership.

• Practical experience with AI-powered development tools such as GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude Code, or similar platforms.

• Experience in building, implementing, or leveraging AI agents to enhance software development, testing, documentation, and engineering productivity.

• Excellent problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder management abilities.

• Familiarity with Java, Python, .NET, or other modern programming languages is preferred.

• Experience in integrating IBM i applications with cloud platforms and SaaS solutions is preferred.

• Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and DevOps practices is preferred.

• Familiarity with event-driven architecture and modern integration frameworks is preferred.

• Experience in healthcare, insurance, or other highly regulated industries is preferred.

• IBM i-related certifications are preferred.

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; a high school diploma plus 4 years of relevant work experience is accepted.
