
Senior Reliability Engineer – Embedded Products

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada, +3 more countries.
• Develop reliability initiatives throughout the lifecycle of essential grid automation embedded and software products.
• Oversee cross-functional teams utilizing reliability engineering methodologies to guarantee system resilience, adherence to regulations, and long-term performance in the field.
• Conduct reliability modeling and statistical analysis for energy management and protection/control products.
• Create and implement hardware and software reliability test plans, incorporating HIL, environmental, and stress testing.
• Facilitate and lead FMEA, FMECA, and Root Cause Analysis for hardware/software failure incidents across embedded systems and communication layers.
• Collaborate with product design, systems engineering, and software teams to integrate Design for Reliability from initial concept to deployment.
• Evaluate field data from deployed devices to pinpoint systemic issues and suggest corrective/preventive measures.
• Partner with utilities and customers on grid asset performance programs and initiatives for grid modernization.
• Develop and uphold reliability KPIs, including MTBF, FIT rate, and availability, incorporating them into product development and quality initiatives.
• Propel predictive and condition-based maintenance strategies using remote diagnostics, SCADA, and sensor data.
• Coordinate with the Innovation Office and Applications team regarding reliability priorities, working groups, standards leadership, and technology strategies.
• Track regulatory compliance requirements such as NERC, IEEE, and IEC standards that impact utility asset reliability and cybersecurity.
• Offer coaching, training, and guidance to internal teams and external stakeholders.
• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
• Significant experience in reliability, systems, or product engineering within the energy or utility industry.
• Knowledge of protection & control systems, grid-edge devices, substation automation, and utility-grade software solutions.
• Practical experience with reliability engineering tools and standards, such as ReliaSoft, ISO 9001/55000, and IEC 61025.
• Understanding of T&D communications protocols and standards, including IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, and IEEE C37.118.
• Strong analytical capabilities and proficiency in Python, R, Minitab, or Power BI.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; capable of engaging cross-functional teams and utility customers.
• In-depth understanding of grid reliability challenges within T&D environments.
• Strong systems thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Collaborative leadership style across engineering, field teams, and customers.
• Data-driven problem-solving approach with a focus on long-term product health.
• Proactive attitude towards emerging technologies and continuous improvement.
• Master’s degree in Reliability or Systems Engineering.
• Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) or equivalent professional certification.
• Familiarity with model-based design and HIL testing, including RTDS, PSCAD, or EMTP.
• Experience directly engaging with T&D utilities, assisting with product deployments, failure investigations, or asset strategies.
• Awareness of cybersecurity risks and reliability considerations for critical infrastructure.
