This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Serbia.
• Design and develop new Python services within the monorepo, including schema, data access, business logic, APIs, and tests, ensuring a high and consistent standard.
• Transition functionality from Java to Python by analyzing an existing Java service, capturing its actual behavior and edge cases, and re-implementing it idiomatically in Python without introducing regressions.
• Maintain the Java stack as necessary by diagnosing and resolving production issues, making targeted modifications, and ensuring the health of services until their retirement.
• Establish and enforce engineering standards in the new codebase, including typing, structure, libraries/services separation, repository patterns, testing, and review quality.
• Engage with data by modeling schemas in PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB, writing accurate and efficient SQL, and designing migrations.
• Take ownership of your work from start to finish, including design, deployment, observability, and on-call responsibilities, driving issues to a lasting resolution.
• Strong foundation as a software engineer with excellent understanding of data structures, concurrency, API and data modeling, testing, and writing maintainable code.
• Senior-level experience with Python in production: idiomatic, fully typed, and well-tested. Comfortable with async programming, packaging, and modern toolchains (type checkers, linters, virtual environments).
• Proficient in Java with production experience, capable of confidently reading, debugging, and modifying a large existing Java codebase while reasoning about its behavior for effective porting.
• Strong skills with relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL, writing SQL directly rather than relying on an ORM, and designing schemas and migrations.
• Practical experience with AWS, building and operating real services.
• A migration/modernization mindset, able to balance 'matching old behavior' with 'building it right for the next decade.'
• A strong inclination for follow-through, identifying what is genuinely needed, focusing on it, and completing the task.
• Excellent communication skills in English.
• **Nice to have:**
• Experience with FastAPI, GraphQL (Strawberry or similar), and scaling async Python applications.
• Familiarity with uv, monorepo workflows, and strict typing (mypy) / ruff in CI.
• Knowledge of TimescaleDB or other time-series databases.
• Experience with Gradle and/or Bazel builds, Jetty, and AWS Lambda.
• Understanding of messaging and streaming technologies such as Kafka/MSK, SQS/SNS, and Kinesis.
• Experience with containers (Docker/ECR/ECS), CircleCI, and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform).
• Experience with authentication using Cognito, JWT/OIDC, or Entra; involvement in partner-integration projects.
• Background in computer vision, machine learning-adjacent systems, IoT, or edge/on-premise fleets.
• You will manage the migration of a mature, real product from a large legacy Java ecosystem to a clean, modern Python platform, making architectural decisions, setting standards for future developments, and witnessing your work impact a camera on a wall, an AI model, and a notification on a parent's phone.
• We are an equal-opportunity employer, welcoming applicants from all backgrounds, and are dedicated to creating an inclusive team.
