This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.
• Design and develop new Python services within the monorepo, including schema, data access, business logic, APIs, and tests, ensuring a high and consistent standard.
• Transfer functionality from Java to Python by analyzing existing Java services, understanding their actual behavior and edge cases, and re-implementing them idiomatically in Python without any regressions.
• Maintain the Java stack as necessary by diagnosing and resolving production issues, making targeted modifications, and ensuring services remain healthy until they are decommissioned.
• Establish and uphold engineering standards in the new codebase, including typing, structure, separation of libraries/services, repository patterns, testing, and review quality.
• Engage with data by modeling schemas in PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB, crafting efficient SQL queries, and designing migrations.
• Take full ownership of your work from design through deployment, ensuring observability and on-call follow-through, driving tasks to a sustainable resolution.
• A strong foundation as a software engineer with excellent fundamentals in data structures, concurrency, API and data modeling, testing, and writing maintainable code.
• Extensive experience with Python in production settings, including idiomatic code that is fully typed and well-tested, with comfort in async programming, packaging, and modern toolchains (type checkers, linters, virtual environments).
• Proficiency in Java within production environments, capable of confidently reading, debugging, and modifying a large existing Java codebase, and reasoning about its behavior to facilitate porting.
• Strong skills in relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL, with the ability to write SQL directly instead of relying on ORM, as well as designing schemas and migrations.
• Practical experience with AWS, building and operating real services.
• A mindset geared towards migration and modernization, able to balance maintaining existing behavior with building for future longevity.
• A commitment to follow-through: you identify actual needs, concentrate on them, and see tasks to completion.
• Excellent communication skills in English.
• **Nice to have:**
• Experience with FastAPI, GraphQL (Strawberry or similar), and scaling async Python.
• Familiarity with uv, monorepo workflows, and strict typing (mypy) / ruff in CI.
• Knowledge of TimescaleDB or other time-series databases.
• Experience with Gradle and/or Bazel builds, Jetty, and AWS Lambda.
• Familiarity with messaging and streaming technologies such as Kafka/MSK, SQS/SNS, and Kinesis.
• Experience with containers (Docker/ECR/ECS), CircleCI, and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform).
• Knowledge of authentication methods using Cognito, JWT/OIDC, or Entra, along with partner-integration work.
• Experience with computer vision, machine learning-adjacent systems, IoT, or edge/on-premise fleets.
• **You will lead the migration of a mature, real product from a large legacy Java environment to a clean, modern Python platform, making architectural decisions, establishing standards for future development, and witnessing your work impact a camera on a wall, an AI model, and notifications on a parent's phone. Experience the satisfaction of greenfield Python development while working within the context of an existing production system.** **We are an equal-opportunity employer and welcome applicants from all backgrounds, committed to fostering an inclusive team.**
