Senior OpenShift Virtualization Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Become a key member of a high-impact team spearheading one of the largest OpenShift Virtualization migrations within the federal sector.

• Assist in the design, deployment, and operation of a multi-tier Red Hat OpenShift environment while facilitating the migration of approximately 10,000 virtual machines from VMware ESXi to OpenShift Virtualization within a large-scale, on-premises infrastructure.

• Create, deploy, and support Red Hat OpenShift clusters in a hub-and-spoke architecture, including global hubs, site hubs, and distributed workload clusters.

• Lead extensive migrations of Windows and RHEL virtual machines from VMware ESXi v7/v8 to OpenShift Virtualization utilizing the Red Hat Migration Toolkit for Virtualization (MTV).

• Convert VMware networking, resource pools, folders, tags, and VM configurations into their OpenShift Virtualization and Kubernetes counterparts.

• Troubleshoot migration challenges, execute rollback actions when necessary, and support migration cutovers during scheduled evening or weekend maintenance periods.

• Deploy and manage essential OpenShift platform services such as Dynatrace, NetApp Trident, Splunk, Commvault, and the OpenShift Compliance Operator.

• Develop and sustain infrastructure automation and deployment pipelines using Ansible, Git, Quay, AutoShift, and GitOps methodologies.

• Integrate enterprise secrets management solutions like HashiCorp Vault or CyberArk into the platform.

• Troubleshoot bare-metal infrastructure, including server hardware and out-of-band management platforms such as Cisco UCS/Intersight, Dell iDRAC, and HPE iLO.

• Engage in Agile delivery, managing tasks through JIRA while adhering to formal ServiceNow change management processes.

• Maintain migration tracking and operational reporting using SharePoint Lists and assist in executive reporting through Power BI and other reporting tools.

• Collaborate with infrastructure, security, and compliance teams to ensure platform accreditation and adherence to regulatory standards.

• Generate technical documentation, migration runbooks, architecture diagrams, and operational procedures while offering technical leadership and mentoring throughout the team.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in designing, deploying, and administering Red Hat OpenShift in enterprise environments.

• Strong background in VMware ESXi/vSphere administration, including networking, resource pools, tagging, and virtualization infrastructure.

• Practical experience in leading or assisting with enterprise-scale virtual machine migrations.

• Familiarity with Red Hat Migration Toolkit for Virtualization (MTV), OpenShift Virtualization (KubeVirt), or similar migration technologies.

• Excellent troubleshooting abilities across virtualization, networking, storage, and infrastructure platforms.

• Experience in implementing and maintaining OpenShift Compliance Operator and compliance remediation processes.

• Proficient in infrastructure automation using Ansible, Git, GitOps, and container registries such as Quay.

• Knowledge of enterprise secrets management platforms including HashiCorp Vault, CyberArk, or comparable solutions.

• Experience in administering or supporting bare-metal server platforms and hardware management tools.

• Familiarity with Agile methodologies using JIRA, ServiceNow, SharePoint, and reporting tools like Power BI.

• Ability to analyze extensive datasets to monitor migration progress, identify risks, and communicate project status effectively.

• Strong communication skills with the capability to collaborate across engineering, security, infrastructure, and customer teams.
